Kydex Secure?

Can anyone tell me how secure Kydex is in retaining a neck knife, for example, when running? Never owned one and am a bit concerned about the security of the knife I have recently ordered that only comes with a Kydex sheath.

That really depends on the knife and the sheath. I have neck knives from RW Clark and Bob Dozier that will not come out of their sheaths until you want them to.

Kydex is secure if it is formed well. My major complaint with kydex that comes with neck knives has more to do with the knife pushing through the kydex. I've know of one instance were a person had a small knife that was hanging near their back pocket, person sat down, and you can guess what happened...

While I know that it's something that probably would never happen, the thought of running and falling while wearing a neck knife is enough to stop me from doing it. When I get knife that has the potential for thrusting through the kydex sheath, I will either make a new sheath or reinforce the tip area with extra Chicago screws...YMMV

After making any of our kydex sheaths , I test them by holding them upside down, and shaking them hard , if the knife does'nt stay put I readjust the sheath. The knife also has to be easy to remove, so their's a fine line their.
To answer your question, yes , but over a long period of time, if you use the knife alot , and pull it in and out of the sheath, it might get loose. The good thing about kydex is with a little heat you can make it fit like new again.

Hey Bob...

I'll try and answer your question, however though it is very wide...

A properly fitted kydex/synthetic sheath is for sure enough to hold a neck knife, not only for running, but even for hardcore activities...

Now the determining factor is ,,is the knife fitted properly....A lot of factory (OEM) sheaths are notorious for poor fit.. Several reasons for this..Mass production being the number one factor...

Also some of the OEM sheaths found are not kydex, but what I believe to be injection molded ABS or Zytel,,something to that effect...

Most everything injection molded will have a funny feeling fit, like pushing a knife into clay, to falling out under it's own weight... There are exceptions though, but most are poor fitting.

If it's a custom knife, then more than likely it will come with a better fitting sheath, as the maker will have wanted to pay special attention to the sheath.. There are also exceptions to this as well...

If you are in doubt, the best way to relieve your mind is to order an aftermarket sheath, if the quality and fit isn't up to your standards....

There are several very good Sheath makers here on the forum..Ask around,,ask questions,, and look at some websites,, starting with mine..:)

I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have..

Hope that helped..

Thanks all. The knife I have on order is a Kiridachi by Fred Perrin. His 'original' sheath was a leather sheath for the belt, but I have ended up ordering from a dealer in France who only had them with a kydex sheath (whole different story and too boring to go into).

My guess is that it will be very well made and fit well, but never having owned such asheath was curious what the concencus was.

Rest assured that if it doesn't fit well, I'll be looking for an after-market...
