Hello!! Yet another question from this knife maker newbie.

I was watching my kydex sheath making video AGAIN last night (thanks Allen) and got to thinking how I could do this at home. I have a small vice which I doubt would do the job. Also, I must do all the work indoors, but my "shop" is a bench outside (I drag my little grinder and drill press out of the shed when I grind and such). So, I was wondering if my little vice would do the trick, or is there a press gizmo I could EASILY build, or what? Any ideas? Thanks a bunch!

Hey Crayola....

All you really need is the mold and some short pipe clamps or large C-Clamps.. 4-6 should do the trick...

You want steady Even pressure all theway around.
Make the mold with a hindge. A great hindge to use is a couple pieces of seat belt webbing,,or other heavy webbing..
You want the hindge to have a little play to fit in large handled knives.

Raise the bottom of the mold off the bench and screw the entire contraption to the bench itself.
The less moving parts you have the better off you'll be,, or you'll end up needing 4 arms to do the job..

Insert the knife and kydex,,flip the top part of the mold over,,and put the screws to it...Clamp the middle first,,then the top and bottom. Let cool and Bingo....

If you are doing this only for yourself,, this is all you'll need to make a few..

Now if you are planning on going into production,, thats a different story all together....
I use a custom made press for all of my work..

Thanks for the info so far.

I knew you'd have some WISE words for me Robert, but I thought I'd rely on you posting here instead of sending an e-mail so that everyone else could share in that wisdom. But, I though when you told me of Greg Lightfoot's carpet/board set-up I wouldn't here of a cruder method, but catalogs take the cake!!!! I never thought of that!

Lemme think out loud here... I put two towels between the catalogs, heat up the kydex, fold it over the knife (for pouch style), put it between the catalogs and squeeze 'em until I gain 1 inch on my pec measurement!! sounds good! Now how about the belt loop? Do I use brochures!!! HAHA!
