Kydex Sheath Mod

I recently received an excellent kydex sheath for the WHC from Steelnut. It holds the knife very securely, and is thin and light enough for pocket carry. The only problem was that I wanted a way to be able to reach into my pocket and pull the knife out of the sheath with one hand. So I cut two notches in the sheath using the cultellus and now I can get the sheath to hook onto the side of my pocket and let the knife be pulled out using just one hand. :D

Now taking bets for how long until the pants pocket (at least) gets sliced and diced!

You could have just attached a Aligator Clip to first rivet by the tip and clip it to the bottom of your pocket.

My preference is just to loop 550 paracord around the first eyelet. Loop a noose around a belt loop and shove the whole knife in the pocket. That is how I pocket carry most my knives. Hard to accidently lose the knife this way. Also, the whole knife and sheath is out of the pocket during the draw :)

I thought about doing something like that but it would take a pretty strong alligator clip to make it work.

I'll let you know, but so far it seems to work quite well. In my experiments so far, the knife is well clear of the pocket before dislodging.

The clips with a pin similar to the ones used for the Hideaway Knives are plenty strong.

sounds similar to Mercop's Tactical Tether

OK folks I'm sure there was some snickering over this naive sheath mod :o, but let me just say that I've carried and used this knife many times since tweaking the sheath and it hasn't cut anything that I didn't intend it to cut. It works especially well in the front pocket of my jeans, after you pull the knife out the sheath hangs nicely in the corner of the pocket and makes it a one-handed operation to re-sheath the knife. Sure it may not get the highest marks for safety but in terms of practicality it works well, at least for me.

Can you post photos of how you use it? I was imagining the sheath staying inside the pocket as the blade is removed. Maybe the way you're using it is not how I imagined, and thus less liable to cut pants?

I'll give the pictures a shot later. But basically the hooks I cut in the sheath catch just the edge or top of the pocket, so that the knife edge doesn't start to become exposed until its above the top of the pocket.

A length of 550 or shock cord and a Grimlock on a belt loop would be what I would use. That way I could use the Grimlock for something else, say holding keys as well.

Concealed carry only here in NYC :grumpy:

The only thing exposed would be a key ring with a bit of cord on it. Would that constitute open carry?

Not really sure  Those grimlocks look like they might draw more attention then I'm comfortable with though.
