I have the standard BM42 Sheath. I've seen these sheaths around. And I'm a little confused. How does the knife stay secure in the sheath??
I can see how it would be drawn. Just straight out. But what keeps if from accidentially coming out. Any of you that have this sheath ever have your knife unintentionally come out?? What are the differences betweent the basic and deluxe sheath. Looks to me the Basic has a better hold of the knife.

I am considering getting one of these for my BM42. What are your thoughts?

I think this is a great buy if you are still interested.

Basically, the kydex is heat molded around the knife, so all the contours of the knife are in the plastic itself, ensuring a secure, tight fit. If you read some of the other posts about kydex sheaths and Xtreme Sheaths, some people, including myself, mention that the sheath is TOO tight. Which means the bali will never "accidentally" come out. With time, they loosen up. You can also warm them up and reshape them a little.

The difference between the basic and the delux, is the clip (I think). The delux comes with a clip that can be mounted horizontal or verticle. While the basic can only be worn horizontally. Correct me if I'm wrong guys. I have the delux.

Clay is very very very good about customer service, so you won't be disappointed.

Aside from the friction provided by the snug fit, there are several little additional "holding zones" that prevents the bali from slipping out. The first are the little dimples that mold around the holes in the handle, best seen in the Basic model. The other is the area around the tang, which is molded very tightly around it, especially around the tang pin, and provides excellent grip. These features acts as "locking tabs" against basic gravity, but will offer only minor resistance to your drawing pressure. Which is also the reason why the amount of kydex material is not relevant in the bali's retention, as the Deluxe will hold the bali as well as the Basic. Even though you would think from the picture that the Basic would hold it better because it holds more of the bali.

Clay's newest modification to the Deluxe model is the addition of the small Tec-Lok belt clip from Bladetech. This clip allows for multi-position adjustment of the sheath. You can find out more about it here:

I've been making the deluxe set-ups more like the basic you see pictured. It has a breakaway bottom that releases easily with a pull back and down slightly.

BloodyKnuckles: Do you have the breakaway bottom on your's?? It really shouldn't be that tight fitting. The first one's I made were a bit tight because I rolled the material over the Bali and popped the eyelets (giving little or no room for expansion).

I've had no complaints about the horizontal rigs since the design change.............. you wouldn't happen to have a powder coated BM would you?? That would also cause a problem.

There are apparently two differences between the basic and the deluxe (from rereading Clay's Xtreme Concealex page): top eyelet and Tek-Lok. Either of them, if you intend to use it, is worth the extra $5. Clay's sheaths are all definitely worth their prices.

I have two Xtreme horizontal belt sheaths from before the basic/deluxe designs. As far as I can tell from the pictures, my sheaths are basic + eyelet + Tek-Lok, as opposed to the deluxe pictured. They may be in line with the revised deluxe design that Clay mentioned. I've tried both of them set up in the belt rig and in a shoulder rig from The EDGE Equipment. The belt setup was annoying until I figured out how to draw properly.

Pushing/pulling the bali handle down (away from the screws) pops the Concealex apart, allowing the bali to pull out much more easily than straight out. Pulling the bali directly out horizontally just makes the sheath slide along my belt until it hits a loop. Also, making the breakaway bottom face upwards (sheath upside-down) doesn't work, as a draw just pulls the bali, sheath, belt, and pants up together.

I have not had any problems with retention, but Kydex/Concealex sheaths are something that need to be seen/handled to be believed. The holes in a BM42 provide plenty of irregularity for a sheath to hold tightly.

See what we mean about customer service. A message from the man himself about one of his sheaths. Doesn't get any better than that.

Clay: Yes I do have one of the earlier deluxe models, and it does have the drop cut. I did have the sheath mounted the other way though, with the cutout on the top, as opposed to the bottom. I'm testing it out a little more. I'm going to try heating it tonight to try and shape it a little. It is great though!

How are those new freestyle vids coming? lol!

I have an older deluxe without the eyelet and it works better than the sheath benchmade gave me. Great design, great contruction, great customer service, just a great sheath. Buy one. You won't be disapointed. Clay knows exactly what we need.

Thanx guys! As usual, you're the best

bloodyknuckles: Dude, I'll do the freestyle vid, but you have to host it on your site....... deal??

Dice!

Clay: I'll hold any and all balisong vids until I get shut off by my provider.

So keep 'em coming, everyone!

A most excellent purchase trust me. I have two of Master Clay's sheaths and they are great. Never had a problem with them.
