Kydex sheath problems

Constructive criticism of kydex sheaths-

Bought a X-42 Recondo. Used extensively while deployed overseas, knife is outstanding. Only problem I have is with the sheath. This knife came with the standard SOG kydex sheath, it is strong, drains water way faster than nylon or leather, can be lashed/tied to anything. But worn on the belt, when I try to draw the knife one-handed, I end up with the knife still in the sheath in my hand. The snaps on the bottom of the belt loop come unsnapped way before the knife comes out of the kydex.

Did not notice this for a few months, as sheath was lashed upside down on LBV shoulder straps. When I moved it to 1st line gear (hanging from trouser belt, along with E&E kit and drop leg pistol), I would have to hold the sheath with one hand while drawing the knife with the other to prevent unsnapping the belt loop.

I can appreciate the need for the quick-on, quick off ability that the snaps add, but I can't see how anyone could even draw the knife in the first place with out a more rigid belt attachment.

Anyone else have similar experiences? BTW, this sheath has seen a lot of heavy use/abuse, and is well broken in, still has same problems. Also, I do like this sheath better than other factory kydex sheaths because the belt loop is stiff, and not soft nylon - makes it easier to draw also. Just don't like the snaps. Could possibly be fixed by using one-way snaps like Bianchi uses on most of their duty gear...or just get rid of the snaps altogether and make it a fixed belt loop...

New to this board, but just wanna say:

Ron@SOG, you boys make some good gear. You put the nice touches on the big fixed blades that guys like me need. Large grip handles, a decent hilt so I don't run up the blade when slamming it into something, and lanyard holes to help me not lose my knife underwater when using it during waterborne ops. Plus you're up in the Pacific NW and I'm a good ol' country boy from Oregon. Just letting you know what one Marine grunt don't like so you can fix it...

Hey Brian,

First of all...a big welcome to BladeForums.com! :)

Thank you so much for the nice comments regarding your successful use SOG’s X-42 Recondo in the field, but I'm sorry you're having some problems with its sheath.

You can obviously see the benefits of the snaps on the sheath belt loop, but it looks like the snaps on your model aren't working well. In some early production models, the snaps had a "two-stage" feel. In that "first stage," it felt as if those snaps engaged, but they really didn't, leaving the snaps to come undone relatively easily. Very firmly (sometimes with the strength of pliers) pressing the snaps closed would bring it to the “second stage” secure closed position. This was so firm, disengaging almost required the prying action of a screwdriver-type device.

It's very rare, but we have had some sheaths where the snaps remained loose all the time. It sounds like yours might be one of these. If so, please drop me an email at: ron@sogknives.com.

In any case, anyone who runs, jumps, tumbles, leaps from planes, climbs, falls, swims, or gets the snot beat out of them (not you, I'm sure! ;) ), they should make sure their equipment is tied down well. In this case, the "flopping" of the bottom of the sheath is a hazard. We strongly recommend using a lanyard to lash the bottom down to one's thigh when attaching the knife to one's belt. As a secondary restraining method, it will keep the sheath attached to one's body in the rare occasion the upper snaps fail and brings the added benefit of keeping the sheath from flapping all over the place during highly active behavior.

I hope this has been helpful. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you. Remember to drop me an email if you feel your snaps are defective.

Take care. :)

bolt_308,

...Another idea; If you don't plan on using the belt-loop snaps, just buy a tube of Superglue (gel) and glue the snaps shut. I've done that a couple of times, and it works well.

Welcome Brian. Ron will take good care of you. He is great!:)

Ron,

Thanks for the welcome and the reply. Agree on dummy-cording everything. Can never use too much paracord/zipties/duct tape.

I now wear this knife drop leg right behind a drop leg pistol holster, hanging off my trouser belt. I thread one of the thigh straps on the pistol holster through the various holes on the edges of the knife sheath. Belt loop is snapped shut and extra zipties keep it clamped down.

Unit SOP at the time was drop leg pistol on strong side, fixed blade knife sheath on weak side and tucked into cargo pocket.

Problem kind of besides the point now. Won't ever wear this knife/sheath combo by itself, as it will stay pretty much paired with the holster for now. Got a few old KA-BARs and a Trident for hunting trips back home...

Well just finished posting reply to Ron and when I came back there were two more msg's...

Good idea Dann, will probably do that today. Zipties are working so far but I'm all for improving the reliability of my gear.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Ron, any chance of a Bowie/Trident style with an eagle, globe, and anchor instead of a trident? Remember reading that you guys do custom etching...

Nope, sorry. The Trident only comes with the SEAL "Trident" crest engraved. Our custom engraving service is geared toward large corporate orders.
