Kydex Sheath Question

Hey Guys.
Is there any practical reason other than personal preference to pick Pancake or Taco Style sheath ? Weight ? Durability ?
Im usually all about leather, but on TG-p I think I'll give Kydex a try. Im thinking Azwelke in Urban Camo should match pretty nice.
Thanks for your input.

More positions to put tek loks, can lash paracord through it, might be more durable but not sure.

Really the difference is minimal

Pancake has more options for attachments but takes up less room. Taco takes up less room but has less options. I prefer taco for small knives and pancake for large ones. For pancake, I'm a little more picky because the part where you push off with your thumb can make a big difference. Personally I LOVE how Mashed Cat does pancake.

Pancakes often have less retention due to the two sides opening/flexing of the kydex. This can be an advantage in some ways spesially with larger blades, 9-10" +.

I like taco style because it is able to be narrower. Here is a few pics.
The brown sheath is a buy brown sheath that came with my rodent 6 the dark green is a quick sheath I made for my other rodent 6.

Next is a work in progress for my battle shark.

If you plan on just lashing your blade to a pack or something pancake is fine but if its going to be on your body less bulk is always better in my opinion.
If I had a tgp to use as a template i could make you a custom sheath. Maybe even a shoulder strap sheath would be good for that size of a knife. Something like this

I prefer taco, takes up less room, and I love it for small knives. And AZwelke makes some AMAZING kydex sheaths. I have several and they are all top notch

I choose kydex over leather because I can store the knife in it permanently without any worry. IMO, storing a knife in a leather sheath will cause it to expand over time and loose its tension to hold the knife firmly in place.

If you get an okuden sheath (pancake), then there are no worries about retention, even with a big blade. He makes sheaths for special operators, and they just work. I have the A-7 for my CG FBM, and it's great.

Having said that, I do prefer taco-style, in general, for the lower profile.

I love everything Eric@Mashed Cat does, Perfection in every sheath he has made for me!!

Thank You for the kind words :)

I think it is personal preference, but I like tacos to wear, and pancakes for packs. With the double talon hole guard, the TG-P is more natural in a pancake, though. (Just my opinion, but I would still use a taco if I was going to wear it a lot.)

Thank You,
Al

Are Carbon Fiber Kydex sheaths weight less than regular Kydex sheaths?

The carbon fiber is a holstex, (another brand of PVC) but it has a really nice carbon fiber pattern. Same weight as kydex for same thickness.

I have made both and like the taco better because of the smaller size.

I've played with a hybrid between the taco and pancake. It gives you the thumb ramp and more mounting possibilities, my new favorite for medium size knives. Uses a little more material, but worth it.

I'm a taco man all the way... I love Mexican food :). No but seriously, I only have taco kydex sheaths as I feel there's no need to have all the other attachment placeholders when I'm not going to use them. I like streamlined, light and easy to carry setups especially for smaller knives.

Pics or it didn't happen :)

i'm in the "process" of deciding taco or pancake too for a few knife

from very small (311) to very long (ak47) to very large (cgbb13) to medium size (cg tg-m, bg snfo) and in between (1311)

right now i'm thinking pancake all the way but i'm still trying to decide

during winter it can get to -20c(-4f) (or colder) how kydex deal with cold and which one between taco and pancake would handle it better?

Hooker!

2 Questions:

1. Did you bend those yourself?

2. Will you craft me some?

OUTSTANDING!

1. Yes, they are mine. Still need to refine my skills for consistency and finish.
2. Wouldn't mind doing something for you, just because I've enjoyed your posts through the years. But, 1, I'm not in the business, just yet. And 2, my job that pays the bills, keeps me busy 60 hours a week. Haven't made the time to sheath all my personal knives.
