I didn't see a more appropriate thread area so forgive me if this isn't the right forum...

I've got a friend who's very well connected in the plastic business. We got to talking the other day about Kydex and we've come up with some really different ideas on sheaths. I'm planning on making my first few designs for myself but if I'm right about their look I'm sure a few people will want them.

So let's say a few or.., more than a few want them.... How do I make them for all the differen't types of knives? I mean it would be easy if I was making the sheaths for only one style of knife but there's a ton out there.

I would appreciate any advice you could give on this.

As a Sheathmaker(leather only),the only thing I can say is that you locate popular brands of knives and make wooden bucks from them to make your sheaths.Other than that you will need that particular knife to get a good fit.Find some local knife people that have the popular brands and give them a discount or a free sheath to get your measurements.Customs will always require a knife in hand or some very good measurements to work from.Hope this helps some.Dave:)

You can never work from measuremnts with kydex. You'll need one of each knife to make the sheaths.

If I don't have the knife or if it's a custom knife I have them send it to me to be fitted.

I would never work from a custom I had as a mold for the same custom another person had, Kydex is tight and any difference will affect the final fit. Most custom knife makers fit their Kydex to each knife they make for just this reason.

Trust and reputation has a lot to do with whether or not someone will send you a $500 custom knife they just spent 3 years waiting for :)

A good start would be to buy up a bunch of popular fixed blades to keep on hand - there is some benefit to this as well as it gives you an excuse to buy more knives!
