Hey,

I am wanting to make some sheath attachments for kydex sheaths I already have.Reason being so I can carry them in differnt ways. What thickness of kydex should I use?
I know most attachments are made of thicker material than the sheath itself for increased rigidity I suppose.Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bobby

Rjt,

Allow me to second Chiro's suggestion. I use the same thickness (.093) for belt loops, etc.

Would you all mind giving a run down on the thicknesses you use elsewhere on the sheaths you make? I really appreciate this information...this is such a great forum!

thanks,

For me it is very simple. Use 0.093" on everything possible. If the knife is thin or small, then I go with 0.060". This "formula" works well most of the time. Some of the newer sheaths that have the draw out the side instead of the top will use .125" f9or a "baseplate", then 0.093" everywhere else.

Well, I use .093 for everything. Big knives, small knives, medium sized knives. All of the sheaths that I make, however, are built for inverted or "any direction" carry. They're usually for harnessing rigs or modified "static cord" rigs that I modified from Blade Rigger's static cord concept. I've found that .093 works best for creating enough hold while still permitting the knife to be snapped in and snapped out of the sheath. Unfortunately, it can also be the hardest to shape precisely compared to .060.

Basically, kydex is so forgiving that even after a little practice with a couple of different thicknesses you'll find which kydex works best for which knife.
