I have spent a lot of time creeping around these forums over the last few months. "Hi...My name is Todd." And, i have a few orders in to John. BUT...up until right now, i have been sad. i see all these cool pics. All these rave reviews. and yet, i have never even HELD a JK Knife.

....until NOW!

thanks to KYenglish for sending me some JK Knives to play with. We did a switcharoo. I'll show you mine if you show me yours (uhhh...so to speak). ;)

anyway...enough of the chit-chat. on to the crappy pics!

Here is what Santa Peter left me under the tree....

L-R: Hiker, Potawatomi Plus, Friction Folder
Phone 062.jpg

KYe had a picture like this in another thread that i found very helpul
Phone 066.jpg

Hiker in hand

Potawatomi Plus in hand

Friction Folder in hand

I have not had a chance to use any of these yet. Initial thoughts: love the hiker. love the potawatomi plus. both feel great in hand. there is some real weight to the hiker, but it melts into my hand. the friction folder is very different than anything i have ever seen/carried. i need to keep playing with that one.

Oh yeah....i love the sheaths too. i know the Potawatomi's sheath is from John, but the sheath on the hiker...is that from John? seems to have a makers mark on the belt loop.

stay tuned.

Great idea! A pass-back n' forth instead of a passaround.

Good on Peter for sending you the JK's to play with.

They can be habit forming though.

best

Ahhh my name in a thread title, I'm famous!

hope you enjoy playing with them, none of them have seen much use lately because of a certain other JK and they need to be use.

As for the sheath on the Hiker, I don't know, it was a seconds off the exchange (that was a good day) and I never thought to ask at the time, sure someone here can probably answer it, I haven't seen a JK sheath like it before, but tat doesn't mean much, I'm still a newbie really compare to most of the guys on here.

TPVT has sent me some of his in return, it'd always nice to make a connection with a stand up forum member and see other knives, and franky an obsession not shared only half as fun, or something like that

can't wait to see/read what you do with them and what you think,

thanks guys. and thanks again to KYe. i hope to do some stuff with them this weekend and get some more pics on this thread.

A knife pass back, great idea guys.
Thanks for the in hand pics, very telling.
I assume that's an XL FF?

Not sure, this was just before John did the XL, that one is the 7" overal and 3 " blade i did the review of

it's good that mykel m is here KYe. you will be interested to know that he is where 2/3 of those knives came from (both KFU's).

Ok...so went fishing today and brought the new knives with me. while my son was really fishing, i decided to put my knives to use making a fishing spear. i took a bunch of pics. BUT...they all seem to be over 2MB which means i can't upload them here or on imageshack (not without upgrading anyway). this never used to be a problem...i.e. all my pics seemed to be under 2MB. now, they all are over. i checked my settings to make sure i didn't turn up resolution or something. nope. anyone have any bright ideas? are there free image sites that allow for files over 2MB?

awww yeahhh....thanks clich...that was the winning answer.

and without further ado, here we go....

i will preface this to say that i've never made a fishing spear (nor have i watched how it's done), but it still seemed like a good way to test out the new knives.

step 1) get a stick. traipsed around a bit until i found a fallen sapling. cut off the end piece (and a baton) with a SAK saw blade.
step 2) stripped bark off said stick
Phone070.jpg

step 3) remove burls (etc) from stick doing some batonning (KYe...i used the hiker for the batonning since i will be keeping that one)
Here is a pic that is almost a before pic (didn't think of this until i already took a whack at it). (you can see some of what i am talking about in the above pic.)

whadda ya mean keep it! ha, coolio, now owrries though, everything can be broken but a JK kife is as tough as they come so you can't scare me young man ;)

Missing the hiker already, but it's time it had a new home, spread the Jk addiction, and open up a new slot on my lineup :)

thanks for the pictures, keep 'em coming

step 4) let's take a rest. Vogue. Go!

step 5) make some sharp things that stick into fish. (starting on the tines)

end product (i may or may not have snapped one of the tines off). three's good, right?

step 6) try it out.

In the end, i waded a bit and chucked it at some sunnies, knowing i would miss. my son was shocked as it drifted away: "dad you worked the whole time we were here on that!"

it's the journey. it was just something to do. now, that i have learned a few things, i can make a better one next time. he caught some fish, so it was a nice way to spend a day.

Thoughts: the hiker (convex) dug into the wood much better than the potawatomi plus. after some quick initial tests, i used it almost exclusively for this job. i was quite impressed by how easy it bit into the wood for stripping the bark. and, i must say...it's not a huge knife but it is a batoning champion. it was quite nimble at guiding through the wood...i.e. i was doing light batoning (like chiseling really), directing it where i wanted it to go. in almost all situations, it bit in, traveled the way i intended and took off the expected amount of wood. very pleased.

with that praise, the amazing part is that i did not sharpen either prior to this test. I was not really planning to do this, but i had the knives with me, so decided to mess around. so, this is not a scientific test, by any means. i would actually like to put a better edge on that Pota and try again.

that Pota seems like it would be a better slicer. maybe i should have a cook off next!

I would like to thank my sponsor, KYenglish.

Wait a minute. I didn't tell you i was keeping it?! as a matter of fact, i have decided to keep them all. and, if you could send mine back pronto, that'd be great. Thanks!
