Hi guys,

First off I want to say I have massive respect and admiration for Royers blade! He’s an awesome smith. But I was wondering if anyone has any insight into one of his courses? Specifically the take down Bowie. I was wondering if it was worth taking for me. I’m am quite new to knife making, 1 year, but I make a lot of knifes and am in the shop about 5 days out of the week. I’m wighting the advantages of a course that costs around 750 (with the discounts that are often applied). Would that money be better spent on a new machine or some other shop upgrades. Any insight is appreciated.

I can't really answer your question specifically, but would suggest watching Kyle's free content first to see if you find it helpful. He's got a lot of stuff out there, and you'd get an idea of his teaching style and maybe a preview of the kind of content you could expect. For my part, I've only interacted with Kyle once (Blade 2021), and a 5 min conversation saved me a lot of frustration and time installing the twisted wires on a fluted dagger handle. A quick tip made a huge difference.

I agree with Travis. There is a lot of free content you can watch first. Something I pick up from his videos is not a particular technique or skill, but just how generally meticulous and uncompromising he is. Part of next level knife making is setting a higher standard for what is acceptable at each step. In the end it also takes practice. You can do all the layout and set up your equipment to best advantage, but there will be steps that rely on skill which takes time.

It’d be like the ABS School….you’d save literally years of trial and error trying to figure it out on your own.

You want to make a knife like Kyle Royer? If so it is worth every penny and will knock years off of your learning curve.

If you are not ready to make such a high level knife then another option is to check out the videos on Chris Crawfords website. Many well known makers showing how to make knives step by step and the videos are around $35

I'm sure you'll learn a thing or two from Kyle's course, Did you look at the New England School of Metalwork's two week beginner's bladesmithing course? I took it about 10 years ago after I had two years of knife making under my belt. Worth every penny. Right now it's $1430 and they have a dorm you can stay in for a moderate fee. My course was taught by Master Bladesmith Mike Williams.

For me $750 is an awful lot of money to spend just to find out that I'll never be as good as Kyle Royer is (I already know that of course, but that's okay 👍 that's why he's Kyle Royer and I'm just a guy that makes pretty good knives! )As Richard338 pointed out the main takeaway from watching Kyle is how uncompromising he is and that's a good thing to learn but you can learn that just by watching his videos on YouTube or something.
By the time you go through $750 worth of steel you'll be light years ahead of where you are now anyway.

I made few online courses (Ismael Biegelmeier and Eduardo Berardo MS) and I always catch some tips, even the smallest one…
Yet, even the tiny tip in some task will served to you and improve your work or time…
Otherwise, if the budget is a problem, then only you can decide after look in to your shop and analyze what you need for now.
