Hey Guys....

I was just wondering something last night..

When you guys pat down Crims and find a blade,, what kind of stuff are you guys finding? Or if you take knives away from regular folk,, what are they?

I'm suspecting they are Cheap-O Delux, Home Shopping Club blades...

You guys ever confiscate any decent blades from criminals ? I doubt that a Dirtbag is going to be carrying a decent blade, although there are probably some Crims that are Knife Nuts as well...

To bad they make it bad for the rest of us law abiding folk....

Having spent a fair amount of time working in the jail besides patrol, I've never had any customs show up. Generaly the knives are total crap, with a couple benchmades and spydercos, and a buck or two. Thats it. And I can say that I have easily found a couple hundred knives. They always get returned though.

Kitchen/steak knives top the list. Mostly carried by homeless and transients for defense. These blades are free, usually retrieved from the trash. The general rule of thumb is cheaper is better. One caveat though, my experience is based on working L.A. County CA. Most of the criminals I contact do not have a lot of money. Those that do either don't carry weapons,(white collar types) or carry guns. Remember, in California a gun is a misdemeanor but don't get caught with a baseball bat or (Oh my gosh!) butterfly knife.

In S/W Ohio you pretty much have to have another charge on a subject before you charge them with carrying an "illegal" knife. I see people every day with quality knives clipped to their pocket and it's no big deal.

Most of the knives I have seen used in crimes are of the common kitchen variety although there are a few of the cheap imitation knives used from time to time. Probably the most expensive knife was about 20 years ago. A Randall mod 1 taken away from a punk. It had a social security number scratched on the blade and the proper owner (it had been stolen in a burglary) was located and the Randall returned. The owner was a Viet Nam Vet.

Nothing but junk! Except, one time I confiscated a Ontario machete, the newer one with the saw and rectangular blade. Crack dealer wanted for rape. Go figure.

"Yup. Bring the guilty bastard in."

I have to agree that after looking through the evidence bin full of edged weapons we seize each year that JUNK is king! Alot of the $9.95 sort imported from everywhere. Rarely does a nice knife (or it's owner) get seized...almost makes you wonder if there's a pattern here!

Hey Hawk....

Yaa there is a pattern...
Crims are mostly too cheap to buy anything decent,, because of the activity it's going to be used for...

Once they stick someone with it,, it gets ditched in the river.. They need another they'll lift one from a store somewhere...

I know I'd rather get a Junker seized by the Cops rather than one of my good blades...That's for sure...

The latest was a Knife Tech (I think) Auto Rip-Off of a Pat Crawford design. I caught some flak for it from a couple of friends. They asked, "You are so Pro-Auto, how can you take his away?" Well, he was shoplifing (a D Felony here in Indiana which the possession of the weapon bumps to a C I think.), had a joint on him, and it's that type of scum that leaves us "Law abiding types" paying for it in higher prices, and more stupid laws on the books.

All the knives I have confiscated were junk except one. I took a Blackie Collins skin diving knife off a guy once. The guy wasn't a scumbag but did have mental problems. I took his knife and a nice pistol grip shotgun. His mother called us and said she did not want him to have either the knife or gun back. I have the knife at home and my chief has the shotgun.

My chief took a switchblade comb off a kid. The kid had removed the comb and attached a pocket knife blade to it. To bad these kids couldn't put that energy towards something productive.

How about sharpened screwdrivers?

The FBI stats that I've read claim that the most common stab wounds in the US are from sharpened screwdrivers(used by perps in the commision of a crime), followed by kitchen knives(used in domestic disputes). Does this jibe with what you guys have found on the job? Do you confiscate many screwdrivers?

TIA,

We mostly deal with lettuce pickers and drug smugglers from one end of the spectrum to the other, not much inbetween. The agricultural workers usually carry butcher knives and large steak knives, all very used and abused. Once in a while a small bladed fingernail cleaner. The dopers, when we do catch them, usually don't have knives but instead carry guns. I've never seen a decent knife but then again these people only carry what they can afford which isn't much.

Normark:
In the O.J. case, it was assumed a "stiletto" was used in the murders, though it was considered by Fuhrman more likely to have been a Victorinox Swiss Army lockblade knife.

Hi James....

Swiss Army..
Hmmm Interesting.....
I could be wrong but I thought I'd seen a picture of a knife similar to what was used and thought it was a big military hunting type blade....

I guess they had traced a credit card from him to it,, or found a reciept or something..
Blade was never found though....

I think they should have asked Kato where it was...
