So, say i wanted a large, tough, inexpensive, stainless, fixed blade beater to chop down small trees and open cans of soup with in the Jungle or something.
What do i have to choose from?

I'm thinking blade steels like 440A, AUS6 and so forth. Certainly nothing that will hold an edge forever, but that's not what i'm aiming for.

I know of Buck, which has several models fitting this description, and perhaps Cold steel has a few suitable models.
Sog has a bunch of bowies, but that's a bit pricy.
Ka-bar has their next generation model, which despite the smallish tang should be rather sturdy.

Input?

I've heard good things about the buck nighthawk, and have been meaning to pick one up. They're pretty cheap, for a good-quality beater-capable knife. The 119 is a great knife, but I wouldn't classify it as a beater. It's more of a slicer. IIRC, the nighthawk was Buck's offering to the navy seals, and was in competition with the sog seal pup and others. I can't verify this with a link or anything, maybe someone else knows what I'm talking about. If you need a REAL beater, get the nighthawk with the besh wedge blade. THAT is a sharpened pry bar.

how large? ths SOGfari macete 13" would be my choice for the listed task. and it has a built in saw on the spine...for around 20.00 i dont see it being beat

But that's not stainless?
Am i correct in suspecting that common inexpensive stainless steel like 420 or 12c27 isn't as though as common inexpensive carbon steel like 1055 or SK-5?

Does it have to be stainless? Just curious. If not, you really open up your selection with carbon steel. Condor Knife and Tool has a good selection of affordable knives in 420HC stainless that are great blades.
