LA County has their own law concering knives. It reads as follows,

13.62.010 Knives and daggers defined.

As used in this chapter, the terms “knives and daggers” shall include any knife having a blade of three inches or more in length; any spring-blade, switch-blade or snap-blade knife; any knife any blade of which is automatically released by a spring mechanism or other mechanical device; any ice pick or similar sharp stabbing tool; any straight-edge razor or any razor blade fitted to a handle. (Ord. 11915 § 1, 1979.)

13.62.020 Carrying knives and daggers in plain view prohibited.

It is unlawful for any person to carry on his person, in plain view, any knife or dagger. (Ord. 11915 § 2, 1979.)

13.62.030 Exemptions to chapter applicability.

The foregoing restrictions shall not be deemed to prohibit the carrying of ordinary tools or equipment for use in a lawful occupation or for the purpose of lawful recreation, or where the carrying of a knife or dagger is a recognized religious practice. (Ord. 11915 § 3, 1979.)

13.62.040 Violation--Penalty.

Any person violating this chapter is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not exceeding $500.00 or by imprisonment in the County Jail for a period not exceeding six months, or by both such fine and imprisonment. (Ord. 11915 § 4, 1979.)

My understanding is that I can legally carry a folding 3" or longer knife as long as its clipped to my pocket hidden from plain view. Also, I should be legally able to do this because one of the exemptions is carrying for the purpose of lawful recreation. So wouldn't law recreation pretty much mean any activity other than legally carrying for an occupation or religious purposes?

Thank you for your time

I have a feeling that recreation would be interpreted as hunting, fishing, trapping, camping, hiking and other such pursuits. Walking to the kwik-e-mart to get some beer and pork rinds on Sunday afternoon probably would not be accepted as a form of recreation.

yes, recreation is intended to include what mp510 mentioned.

activities where knife use is essential or generally accepted.

playing basketball recreationally is not one of these activities, for example.

and for future reference, that is not a municipal code, which is a city law. county codes and municipal codes are different and are normally enforced in different areas.

Thanks, but can I legally carry a folding 3" or longer knife as long as its clipped to my pocket hidden from plain view?

I don't know about LA, but in NYC, "plain view" includes ANY ability to recognize that a knife is being carried, including not only a visible pocket clip, but even a visible outline of a knife in a rear pocket.

We are still allowed to carry knives, but they must basically be hidden by law, in such a way, that a police officer wouldn't know whether you were carrying one.

The reasoning for this escapes me, but such is the law, and I follow it.

yes. but it must be completely concealed to be within the letter of the law.

Is there anything that prohibits carrying 2 or more folders?

I have tried a hundred different knives over the years, but have settled on two Emerson Combat Karambits (a skootch under 3"). If I am unable to draw from one side, I should still be able to get to the other side. These things are so versitile!!!

Cool. Those Emerson karambits are nice.

I was having a discussion with my old man the other day about carrying, I told him how I wanted to get an on/scene sheath for my 710 and carry it on a Mercharness. He said it would probably be frowned upon if I ever get searched with it on and mumbled something about carrying/concealing a deadly weapon.

What do you guys think?
