i just got a new la griffe and i want to wrap the handle with od para cord, what are some good ways to wrap it, can you guys show me some, thanks

thats nice, can you tell me how you did that, and did you remove he strands from the para-cord before you wraped the handle

SCARFACE,

Welcome to the fourums. Yes, I did remove the guts before I wrapped the knife. I started the wrap by wrapping the fingerhole and the 1st hole twice and then with one piece I started on the left and the with other piece the right. I wrapped the holes as close as could get them for a good flat fit. I continued down on either side until they met in the middle at which point I tied them off with an overhand knot and then slide on a pony bead.I added one more overhand knot and then I burned the ends. The key is to do one side at a time and then you can pretty much eyeball the meeting in the center.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out. :D

thanks,i like that alot, my para-cord should be here in a couple days i will let you guys know how it turns out, are there any other ways of wraping, cause i might get another la griffe

That sure looks nice!

I'm looking forward to receiving my LaGriffe, I'll be trying that wrap out, that's for sure.

While we are talking about the la griffe, can anyone tell me how to
sharpen the darn thing. Last night I tried useing the lansky system, then stones and the edge of the thinner stones. I have this sharpening problem with all my Emersons. Can someone help this novice?

SCARFACE,

A quick search found this pic. It was done by forumite 2sharp by following the handlewrapping instructions on the Strider website.

I've tried it, and just couldn't get mine as clean as his, so I just did one like KVC's above. Besides, IMHO, the strider wrap made it too thick to really disappear under light shirts. At least for me it did. YMMV.

Mike

I wrapped mine similar to how Ken did his except that I left the guts of the cord in. It made the handle much easier to grip and it didn't disappear as much in hand. I tried the Strider wrap, but I guess I'm not as skillful as some of you guys.
Matt

i can't even begin to visualise the strider wrap
i did mine the easier way, works just fine with thin cord, not 550 paracord

anyone have a better way to describe the strider wrap than the strider website?

docwesley,
an inexpensive stick sharpener should work fine - just remember to only sharpen the ground side and only take the burr off of the flat chisel section.

What Quiet Storm said. Another suggestion- use a "sharpie" type marker to mark the edge of the blade only. You will be able to tell where you are removing steel when using a freehand method. A quick swipe w/ the flat side of a fine stone, a leather strop, or passing the flat over a bit of cardboard (back of a legal pad is best) works to remove the leaf/burr edge. Practice.

Ken,
how long should that cord be?

Marcus

hey, i all but forgot about this thread
here's a pic of mine

pardon the poor image quality (copy and paste shortcut please, apparently the webhost doesn't like hotlinking)

i think i used not more than 2m of middle thickness cord
if you use 550 paracord, i imagine you'll be needing ard 1m?
still, more is safer :)

Marcus,

I never really used any set measurement. I guessed! :) If I had to guess I would say about 4 ft. just because I like to have alot to hold onto to keep it nice and tight around the knife.

DEA,

Your link to the pic doesn't allow me to see the knife. :(

you'd need to copy and paste the link
apparently my hosting is quite anal retentive about offsite linking, much like geocities

let's see if this works

Hey, just a suggestion...it doesn't look cool, but it functions like a dream.

I use "tennis racket wrap" from a sporting goods store. I bought it in black and I bought the good stuff w/ the sticky tape over the entire back side. then i split the tape down the middle and, with a good amount of effort, was able to get the entire thing "over-wrapped". Then I took a box cutter and cut away and the material at the edges until it fit my hand perfectly.

The best things about tennis wrap is that 1) it's tacky, its designed not to slip if you get it wet, 2) it's pliable, which allows it to conform to any hand size or shape, and 3) it's easily manipulated, so that you can wrap it up tight and then cut it to fit perfectly in your hand. The worst thing about tennis wrap: it's ugly. My griffe doesn't look as scary or like it's a Navy Seal heirloom like the picture DEA has posted, but the tennis wrap lets me get a perfect hold on it instantly, thereby reducing the time it takes to pull it out of it's sheath and reducing the likelihood that I'll cut myself if I have to pull it out in an emergency. Also, and I hope I never deal with this, one of the problems w/ any knife is that if you use it for combat and blood gets on the handle...it increases the chance that the knife will slip out of your hand or that your hand will slide up the knife, coming in contact w/ the blade (I have a friend who used to be a CIA agent (retired) and worked in latin america in the 80's. He saw quite a few guys lose knife fights after their knife got wet from blood and they ended up slitting their hands open on their own knifes! I assume that they then either ran away or...just continued losing the fight...). Anyway, consider tennis wrap.
