I decided to make the most of the holiday weekend, and did a dayhike on Saturday to Mitchell Peak, and today to Giant Forest.

I went to Mitchell Peak earlier this year, seen here:

Saturday I went with a couple of my old backpacking friends, one who is a little older than me who brought his younger son (mid-20s) and one who is younger than me who brought his young sons (9 and 6), who were on the first summit attempt of their young lives. Here they are partway up:

I got to the summit ahead of everyone and took my pictures before they arrived. It was really hazy because of smoke drifting down from the Rim fire in Yosemite, especially obvious in the picture looking down toward the valley where you can see a lot of smoke

The two young boys did very well and when they got to the top they had a blast climbing on all the rocks. They kept climbing and exploring the whole time we were up there, pausing only momentarily to eat their lunch. Here they are on top

Final parting shot, looking back up as the rest of the group starts down, you can just see them above the rocks at the top

I think we have two new hikers and climbers, those kids had a great time.

Now for part two, today's activity. I recently discovered that one of the missionaries serving in our area, who is from England, hadn't been to Giant Forest yet. So I took them there today, along with another of my backpacking friends, who brought his whole family along.

First stop was Moro Rock, views looking down and up. Looking up to the Great Western Divide did not give very good pictures, between the smoky haze that is still lingering and the problem of shooting into the sun.

We took a loop in Giant Forest that was about six miles. Along the way we visited a number of very nice trees; the only way to convey their size is to include people in the pictures, so some of these have the others in the picture.

Random pics along the way

We all had a great day. The younger daughter of my friend was the one who kept bugging her father to go on a hike with me, and all of his kids did very well and enjoyed it a lot.

Whoah! I've gotta go to California and see those trees! Thanks for sharing again such nice pictures.

That's massive! Awesome photo's. Just look at that panoramic view, WOW! I hope I get to see one of those huge trees at least once in my lifetime, they're just mind boggling.
Thanks for this report!
