Is that pin going thru the bone part of the handle? I would think of it as possibly problematic.

I still think overall it’s a great looking piece, but upon a closer look....Flawed design call?

What is your reasoning for citing design flaws?

Obviously, the more components an object has, in this case the handle components, the more potential points of failure there are, but why is putting a pin through bone an issue? Shrinkage?

This is not meant to be contentious. Just curiosity.

I am very leery of bone handles, as the only bone handled khuk that I have basically disintegrated (the handle) in my hand the first time I used it. It was essentially hollow (no laha/cutlers resin inside), so a construction flaw. I was able to repair it, but I still don't trust the thing.

Thanks,
Joe

Depending on the bone or antler there can be a lot of marrow or soft tissue inside. That could possible break down and cause a failure. I love antler handles myself, a perfect natural grip texture and I love the look.
I don't see any potential issue with a pin thru the bone part of the handle myself. That bone most likely would be the last piece to shrink. If the hole was too tight it would have already split.
I'd not pass it up if I had the loot myself but then again I could be missing something too. It's happened before, I think it was 1958 or maybe 59.

Thanks for the kind replies. Without having the piece on my hands, I am imagining/picturing that middle pin being mostly ground down, but I see a portion that is leveled with the bone ring (the raised middle section). Just seemed a little off. No? And I suppose shrinking/or fracture could leave that raised pin section sticking out rather sharply.

I'm sure just over thinking stuff.

Well, I'm not seeing the issue with the pin, but I'm sure that your eyes are much younger than mine.

As for "Without having the piece on my hands...", there IS a relatively simple fix for that...
