Wow. Pretty devastating. The pics that struck me were the purple foot and the building that looked like it collapsed almost intact onto the first floor garage. Definitely some questionable work there.
I dunno, I think it's in-bounds for the forum. There were bodies, but they weren't gruesome or graphic. I might want to go through them with really young kids (<10 or so) especially if they weren't familiar with what earthquakes are or what happens. Beyond that, I think even kids should be aware of tragedies like this. There are many scotch discussions and angry "differences of opinion" I would steer people away from before curbing this thread, unless perhaps they were on the Bay Bridge during the Loma Prieta earthquake. Just my 2 cents.
Anyway, my best wishes and hopes for the people trying to rebuild and get on with their lives. I've heard there was lots of shoddy construction and fraud that magnified the death toll. I hope the people responsible face justice - cosmic if not civil.
Edit - note the date. This was over a year ago, and it got decent coverage in western media. After the first few weeks, state media became much more restrictive. Lately, moves to investigate poor construction and corruption have been suppressed. I'm not a China expert, but it seems like the official Chinese publicity is much better than it would've been 10-20 years ago. Not totally open, but not totally repressive either. The Chinese reaction also looks better when compared with an actual event like New Orleans/Katrina response rather than comparing them to ideals of open society.
