What are those things you knocked down from the tree?

In Thai,these are called "Gow Lot" (Hard to translate:o)...

They are fried with sand (no oil) in huge woks for a long period of time..
(The sand is a good conductor of heat).... They smell really good when cooking..very nutty!

Being that there is so much Chinese influence in Thailand, i would think that
this is also one method of preparation used in China.. ????

Those are Chestnuts, they are available in most Asian countries. It is like a nut and has a robust shell. People use it for stews(after they extract the "meat) or for snacks when roasted in a giant drum :thumbup:

One day I'll go to China like that!
