(This is sort of off-topic, but the ones taken outside illustrate well one troubling aspect of China that I observed/experienced when I was there in late 2005: the air quality, which can be seen and felt. My wife (who is Japanese) visited China a year after I did, and made the very same observation. Clearly, the heavy industrialization is the main cuplrit. The good news is that this can be reversed, though it can take years or decades. Japan was once like this, and the air quality there has improved significantly.)
