Hi anyone using BK3??

I've had my eye on one for awhile. Just expanded my Becker's to prepare for deer season so the 3 wasn't in the equation yet. How do you like it? what do you like to use it for? I imagine it would be the best blade in the lineup to keep in the car for emergency preparedness, but that's a whole lot of steel to sit around and just wait for an emergency.

I dun get to use it much compared to my other BKs but its still a great piece to have in the car indeed but I might have a RMJ Kestrel coming soon so that might join its place in my emergency vehicular kit.

Hi Mathias,

I use it quite a bit. In fact, it usually replaces my BK-4 (which is my favourite knife of all time) because of its length - it fits into my hiking bag so as not to spread fear in the soccer moms I may encounter on the trail.

Though most people think of it being specifically a vehicle tool, it's quite useful in the woods. I previously posted 2 threads showing this which can be seen here and here.

It's really versatile in an outdoors setting. In addition to having one in each vehicle for emergency use, I have one that I have used for
- digging holes when transplanting plants from pots (veggies or ornamentals),
- chopping roots when digging up dead shrubs (had a lot due to the drought the last 3 years)
- scraping dirt out from along side pipes when digging them up to remove/repair/add on to,
- as an "emergency" hive tool for working beehives when I misplaced the regular hive tool,
- as a pry bar to tear apart crates / pallets
- breaking down boxes
- cutting woven plastic straps being used to affix "stuff" to pallets

just to name a few.

I recommended it to a friend and his wife who go out treasure hunting with metal detectors for use as a digging tool and they love them (they got 2) for digging up things found with their detectors.

Thou it may be shorter in size but it still pack lots of punch with that beefy blade which chops fire wood really well.

people here are quite sensitive seeing someone having an exposed knife on their bag so I do agree that his piece fit really well in my super falcon without taking too much space.

just got a BK9 recently and perhaps will use both of them to get some good comparison in performance out in the field.

some people kinda worried about this piece as the strap cutter area might actually weaken the blade and i wonder if anyone has actually managed to crack it.

There has been a few people who have managed to break it off at this point, though it is rather uncommon. There was a video making the rounds of a fire crew pulling apart a Dodge Omni using just the BK3 and it worked fine, even after the top bit snapped off due to trying to pry out a nader pin on a door. I don't know if they were trying for the door and got it behind the pin?
But I digress, it happens but not frequently.

I love the 3. Been meaning to order one several times now and something always comes up. It's one of the very few "must haves" in my blades to get list. Looking forward to getting one and pounding on it!!

I seriously want to add a BK3 to my collection. I'd even swap out my BK9 for it, if for no other reason, the included flat hammer for glass breaking purposes. You never know when you might need it.

i like mine, but i'd never swap my 9 for it.

i would trade my hatchet, pry bar, chipping hammer and a few chisels for one, but not my 9.

I just got the last sheath I had ordered -- for the BK12; so I now have everything I need, the BK2, 7, 9, 10, 12 and 17. Don't need anything else. However the A/C went out in my study. My son installed it through the wall 12 years ago. I think it weighs about 150 pounds. He put a new one in a little while ago and moved the old one out beside my trash barrels. I figured I'd have to take it apart bit by bit, but I didn't have the right pry bar for the job. We had to go to Home Depot for something so I looked at the pry bars just to prove I was being conscientious. With each one I looked at I said to myself, "that cost 1/4 as much as a BK3," or "that on costs 1/3 as much as a BK3." I just wouldn't have been happy with anything I saw; so a bit ago I ordered a BK3. It will arrive Monday. :D
