I am looking for a hammer pole hawk for camping and hiking(general camp duties). The LaClair Shrew and Trappers Companion looked interesting, but I could not find a lot of information on them. Does anyone have one-how do they like it and how is the quality. I have also looked at the Hays Montana Hunter. Other suggestions are very welcome.
Thanks
Peter

How much are you planning to spend cause I hear steve at coal creek forge makes a nice hawk, but If you want cheap fort turners or even cold steel hawks work very well. I should also add I have both a trail hawk and rifleman hawk but I use my gb sfa the most often

I've got a shrew hawk. It's a small tomahawk which works for me when I carry it hunting. It's a forged head and it takes a nice edge. The handle fits ok but I've had mine loosen up on me a bit.

Here's a pic of it next to a Ka-Bar kukri machete for comparison...

My son has one as well. He says "it's nice for throwing but kind of crappy for chopping wood."

Your mileage may vary.

I would be willing to spend up to about $200 if I was getting something for it.
I have also heard that the Coal creek forge hawks are nice, but have had trouble finding a sales site for them,to see what they have and what they cost. The link I have seen takes me to a Youtube site. It is interesting but I do not see anyway to buy.
Thanks for the info Gingivitiskahn. I was thinking of the Shrew more as a pack carry( sacrifice chopping ability for weight) . The trappers Companion might be better as a camp tool/chopping or at least that is what I would hope.
Thanks for the replies
