Here in the Great State of Merlin lacrosse is a very big sport. I've played baseball for the last 7 or so years. I'm interested in playing lacrosse next year, I think I cought the fever. If anyone here has played lacrosse before, tips and stuff would be welcome. The only experience I've had is playing it in PE class. I want to play defense, and my younger brother wants to play middie or attack. Thanks for any tips or things.

i played lacrosse in college (probably before you were born  ). i played defense

it is the one sport that is fun to practice. i always preferred sticks with the traditional webbing rather than a mesh...not sure what the current rage is

the first bits of stuff you need is a stick of course, some gloves (it hurts if the ball drills your hand), a few balls, and some eye protection.

even if you are planning on playing D..i would get a short stick as it is a lot easier to learn technique on.

I played in college (UConn). This was back in the mid nineties, so take this for what it is worth.

I was a middie.
Preferred stick: STX laser HiWall with a crooked arrow shaft. Buy this stuff separately. Don't go get a stick from the average sporting goods store. You won't get exactly what you want. I preferred the traditional lacing on the head as opposed to the mesh or combo lacing.

Crooked Arrow shafts are great because they are heavy and really lets someone know you were there when you swat them with one. Durable as heck too.

Cut your shaft down as short as you can legally have it. Make sure it is within spec. You do NOT want to find out the hard way during the pre-game stick inspections that you have cut too much off.

Have at least one spare stick ready to go at the games. Cold weather has a way of snapping heads.

Arm guards: I preferred the greaves style versus the sock style arm guards. Just my preference.

Wear a cup and a mouthpiece.

Keep your head up and your eyes open.

Practice with your off hand.

Don't be just a Righty or a Lefty.

Enjoy. Maryland has great LAX programs. You'll learn a lot.

Screw Lacrosse- Play Rugby. ;)
Let me know where you are in MD & I'll find a club for you...

(just messin' w/ ya- Lacrosse is a cool sport & a good bunch of folks.)

At school, both the Lacrosse and Rugby teams tended to look at each other and think that they were completely nuts.

Now I KNOW the rugby players were nuts.

I've played baseball my whole life, it's still America's pastime, and I love it. It's more than just a game, it's a tradition and the basis of a culture. So I gotta admit, I used to think all those long-haired fancy lookin lacrosse players were a bunch of cocky punks. Well, I've seen the light. Lacrosse is a great game (though not as great as baseball), and what draws me to it is the speed and contact involved. So thanks for all the great advice and stuff, I appreciate it.

And Rugger, I'll play rugby some day when I get tired of lacrosse and football. (But you can't stear me away from baseball).

Tell ya what, one match & you'll wonder why you wasted so much of your life standing around waiting for something to happen in baseball... until you're suddenly playing softball, the idea of which depresses me to no end.

There's nothing like a bunch of demented, collision-crazed meat trucks who want to step on your face to get your attention & keep the adrenaline flowing. Then you become one of them. And then there is the beer. If you keep the concussions down to a minimum, you might just keep some good memories. :p

Harummpphhh, Lacrosse players...
Back in the day during college, our rugby team got into the sweet brand new athletic fields that were built for the various clubs and intramural teams. Well, one fine Saturday, while the A-side was playing, us troublesome B-siders were making a few (ahem) comments about the lacrosse players. (how can you be wearing a frickin' helmet, pads, gloves, carrying a stick, and not be allowed to kick the crap out of the other team's players was beyond our comprehension). Well, their pansy-arsed coach complained to the University, and us poor ruggers got kicked out and had to go back to the dog-poop infested park we used to play at. :grumpy: :D
It's still ok though, we had better parties, more chicks, and the satisfaction of knowing that ruggers are more manly than lacrosse players. ;) :D

LOL! That's good stuff Mongo!
Actually, the one 1/2 semester of College rugby I played, (already played club rugby), we shared the training park w/ the Lacrosse guys. They ran 2 circuits of the complex & we ran 4. Being gentlemen, and being good sportsmen, we ALWAYS invited our esteemed Lacrosse colleagues to join us on our last two laps as we passed them. We were deeply hurt when they declined our invitations. ;)
