Ladies tactical pen, or......

The wife is going on a "girls trip" to New Orleans in May. I have heard some nasty stories. She is doing carry on only. I want her to have something she can easily carry as a last line of defense that won't get confiscated at the airport (Logan Airport TSA are make Nazis seem warm & fuzzy) so Blades & pepper spray are out. The only thing I can think of is a tactical pen. I have checked to get a basic idea of whats out there, but really have zero knowledge about them. I do know that the only thing I trust from gun makers are guns. So I eliminated those brands immediately (or should I have?).

My hope with this thread is twofold.
1. Getting suggestions on a tactical pen. Under $40.
2. Getting advice on any onther SD tool that fits the above criteria.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Small flashlight would do. Useful for light in an unfamiliar area or dimly lit restaurant. :)
Any metal body pen, especially simple, non-tactical design.

Zebra 710 pen. Nice steel body. Fits the hand. Won't be confiscated by TSA. And useful.

I would say think outside of the box. I kept a mini crowbar when I lived in new York because the knife laws are so strict. Not a weapon till you use it, but I don't know if it would clear air security. If all she has is a pen, she would need the kind of skill that she could defend herself pretty well without it anyway. May as well stick her keys in her fist. Maybe she can stop at a store once she's there and get some mace or something. If your really worried about her safety you'd want her to have more than a pen I'd think.

If they take nail files and such, they'll probably take a mini crowbar. Purchasing pepper spray upon arrival makes sense to me, though.

Are small SD tools like this even practical for her? You have two problems that I can see;
Deployment would be a problem if she's carrying it anywhere but in her hand already. She's not going to have time to fish around her purse for it.
Does she have training for such a thing? I've nixed these tools for my own personal use because I have no idea how to use them.

My suggestion would be to remind her to be careful about her surroundings and to stay in a group. Staying in a group is better than anything you can buy that would go on a plane.

Yep. Makes sense to me too. Unfortunately I know she won't do it. It took me hours to talk her into bringing something with her. I should have pointed out that we live in Mass and she's an accountant (in other words: she's liberal and she's cheap). Hence my dilemma.

Do you know where she is staying? Find a local shop and see if they will take a card over the phone and deliver pepper spray or a knife when she arrives? Dunno, just a thought?

I see this all the time, well guess what there's no criminal training either, most of them are uneducated junkies looking for the easiest target. At the end of the day if someone attempts to cause harm to my wife I'd much rather her have a knife/kubaton/pepper spray/big stick that she has zero training with than for her to have nothing but her bare hands, especially in an unfamiliar city far away from anything/anyone she knows.

Sure in an ideal situation you'd have a weapon of your choice that you were well trained in the art of using, but in what ideal situation are you needing a self defense tool anyway? By the time it comes to needing a tool to defend yourself pretty much everything else has gone out the window and in your last ditch effort to stay alive who cares about form and doing it the right way.

The right way is staying alive/preventing bodily harm, what foot to have forward and how to bend your arms / hold the tool doesn't matter in the end. Only survival/winning matters.

Amen my friend.
I knew my question would illicit at least one "proper training" response. My wife even said it. What you said is almost my exact reply. Sometimes the difference between life and death can be a wild, panicked swing with a blunt object while your are eyes closed. When it's someone you love, you do what you can to give them that chance. Even if she is only doing it to placate me.

Just want to add-

I'm not discrediting training in the least, not sayin you don't need training. By all means train all you possibly can but don't forgo carrying a potentially life saving tool (be it a knife, blunt instrument, pin, sharpened stick, what have you) because your not trained with it. When your life is threatened you might be surprised at the ways your body/mind can come up with to survive, be it defensive of offensive.
