LAFD Firefighter Glenn L. Allen

HOLLYWOOD HILLS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Los Angeles city firefighter who was burned while battling a house fire in the Hollywood Hills died Friday of his injuries.

Glenn L. Allen, a 38-year veteran of the force, died at 12:15 p.m., said Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The 61-year-old was about a year from retirement.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has ordered city flags lowered to half- staff in memory of Allen. He issued the following the statement:

"Today, I join all Angelenos in mourning the loss of firefighter Glenn Allen, a fearlessly committed firefighter who dedicated 36 years of his life to protecting the people of Los Angeles. Glenn was a valiant hero whose selfless sacrifice will forever be honored.

"This tragedy serves as a somber, yet powerful reminder that the brave men and women of the Los Angeles Fire Department put their lives on the line each and every day to keep us safe from harm.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the family of firefighter Allen and his extended family of firefighters at LAFD."

Allen was one of several firefighters trying to douse a fire at a huge home on the 1500 block of North Viewsite Drive shortly before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday when the roof collapsed.

"The pipe to the sprinkler system actually melted, filling the ceiling up with water. Due to the nature of the construction, that ceiling was then saturated with water," said Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Jaime Moore.

It was so much water that it collapsed all at once, injuring six firefighters.

The home has been red-tagged. Two people were inside the home when the fire started. They were able to get out safely before the firefighters even arrived.

The cause of the fire was under investigation. Officials said they do not suspect that arson was involved.

My condolences to the Allen family.

Rest in peace, brother.

:( Heartbreaking. My dad was a volunteer firefighter, and I remember some of his experiences.

Condolences to the family, and many thanks to all who serve us.

memorial service will be this friday, feb 25, in downtown l.a.

all info is available on the LAFD website.

My father was a firefighter (search and rescue team leader and paramedic) for over 30 years.

I have an unnatural fear of being trapped in a burning building, so the men and women who risk their lives running into those buildings have my deepest respect. They are heroes.

Smoke going out to his family and all the firefighters out there.

Prayers sent. When I heard how close to retirement he was, my heart sunk. Sprinkler pipes in the attic melted? Irrigation installers must have been too lazy to trench? I am only speculating, but this type of poor design ended up causing a life to end. No one would have ever thought that could happen like that, but it did. It is never a good idea to have a water main up through your attic in pvc regardless for water damage potential. There is a reason the pipes are copper in the house, and pvc on the outside.
