Anyone have experience with the different laguiole brands? I have two a Forge de Laguiole which is superb, great fit and finish, nice workmnaship and a nice strong snap on the blade. I have another brand which I won't name where the blade is so stiff I almost lose a finger every time I close it, the fit and finish are bad and overall it is a pretty poor knife - of course it cost a
third of the Forge de Laguiole knife.
Wondereing if anyone can rate the different brands/makers?

Neil,
I also have had some that were not so hot. However, I just got one from Gilles at Fontenille Pataud and it is most excellent. I think you could safely add him the list of better makers.

Thanks Muss. I am hoping ELDE will stop by this thread to as in aprevious thread on French knives he seemed pretty knowledgable.

Hi,

Here are the following brands I like (in no particular order) ;

Made in Laguiole o in the area of Laguiole :

- "Forge de Laguiole" (especially the ancient style models and the custom models made by Virgilio Munoz)

-"Laguiole de l'Artisan"

- "Laguiole en Aubrac"

- there was another brand "Le Coutelier de Laguiole" but I do not think they are still making knives in Laguiole anymore (too bad, the knives were beautiful)

Made in Thiers :

- "Fontenille Pataud" (Gilles)

- "La maison des Couteliers"

There are many others ,bigger factories (DAVID, THERIAS) or lonely crafstmen (FRANK,VIALON, PONSON,BEILLONNET) , but these above are the names that first come to mind.

Dr.,

Don't grade a Laguiole down just because it is stiff or difficult to close. Most Laguioles are a little on the stiff side. In fact, some people think that the "Bee" or "Fly" decoration was originally placed there to allow you to pull back on it to help release the slip joint. (Hopefully I used that term correctly, I don't know my knife parts all that well.)

Very, very nice Muss. I am currently researching a new EDC Laguiole. Has anybody seen SWAT, the movie? main bad guy uses what looks like a horn handled Laguiole.

ELDE, do you know anything about AU SABOT? I'm thinking about getting one but I've never heard of them before.

Yobbos1,

"Au Sabot" is a fair , good brand of knives located in La Monnerie le Montel, near Thiers.

They make Laguiole, Vendetta, Thiers and traditional models of pocket knives.
They make kitchen knives and some garden-edge tools too.

Take a look at their website :

Faithfully yours,

ELDE

I have found Gilles of France to offer very fine workman ship and materials. These would make excellent collector pieces with all the options available. They would also make a fine carry via pocket or belt sheath. The steel is quality 12c27, or Damasteel. They will not hold an edge at the rated RC54 for the 12c27, or the Damasteel. The 12c27 at high 50`s will get very sharp. Damasteel at 57+ will offer a good blade. I find the knives to be of little use unless they are for display purpose only. The largest market for export is the USA, and we expect better then what is offered.

Be well
Floyd
