Laguiole knives?

Having seen some quite attractive Laguiole knives on here and on the bay, I've started looking closer at them as they seem to offer a classy knife at a decent price. I'm getting confused though when I see different makers listed, such as G. David, Gilles, C. Lacaze, and others. All seem to have the bee and most seem to use the same 12C27 steel, with some in 440 and Damascus. I realize the Laguiole is a pretty old pattern, so there be a few makers producing a national pattern. I guess what I'm asking is for a brief education on current Lagioule knives. What constitutes a Laguiole knife? Are there accepted makers and others who are to be avoided? If I decide to get one, or more, I don't want to end up getting junk when I was trying to get a good and attractive knife.

Feel free to show pics to illustrate or just to show em off.

There are so many manufacturers nowadays, see below some links where you can't go wrong:
http://www.layole.com

You can also take in consideration that carbon steel is avalaible.
If you're interested, let me know, tell me what you're looking for, forged bee or welded, handle material, blade steel, length, liners and bolsters matérial( stainless steel, brass), your range of price, i will launch a research, the week end is here :D

i own one with a horn handle it is a nice knife it says modele depose on the case any one know what it means

on the blade it says veritble laguiole 74 then st joanis under neath it

any info on price or anything as i am selling all my knifes as a job lot theres about 100

Andy, i think that "modèle déposé" means "patented pattern" and for the inscription it should be St-Joanis Mondière 74, see the explicative link in French , but have look to the left column and search 74, you will probabely recognise your inscription, hope this help:

Garonne & Kamagong, thanks for the links. Some nice knife work there. I'll definitly have to put a few on the "to get" list, too long already it may be.

I like the Theirs also. Sigh, so many lovlies, so little money and time.

Just be careful buying Laguioles on ebay, because these are a favorite of counterfeiters for some reason. I'm told they come primarily out of Pakistan.

Here are a couple of blatent examples, but in perusing the listings there are many more that are questionable:

I agree with previous posters to stick with dealers of solid reputation on these knives in particular. I got burned on one about a year ago, because I tried to get one on the cheap. I even asked the seller about his supplier and he indicated he got them direct from the Laguiole factory. The knife I received was an obvious fake.

Good luck!

You're so true, each morning when you wake up, a new Laguiole manufacturer was born. :D with catchy prices, today you can own one with a few bucks, one day i saw one for the price of an Opinel, choose the Opinel it will be more loyalty. By here, i count within 80 and 120 Euros to get one with forged bee, double liners fileworked and 12C27 steel, good luck.

Amos, check out this recent thread, too. Best info to keep in mind is that Laguiole is a region which has a number of makers producing knives in this pattern.

Good luck. They are nice.

I would stick with Gilles or Forge de Laguiole.
I bought a Gilles a few months ago in Paris at Courty et Fils, and I'm really happy. 100% handmade, nice fit and finish

Prepare to pay a 100$ at least.

Check this shop!

I second layole.com.

Gave dad a prestige model in 12c27 & ebony he loves it.
Cheers

Layole.com (Laguiole De L' Artisan) are really good. Christophe, and Honore Durand are really good guys, very nice (helpful, friendly, etc.). I have had them make me quite a few folders over the years (stag, horn, in nice file work, etc.). They are a "class act".

While they have workmen (and women) that make them for them, they oversee the operations personally. Their knives are "1st rate".

You would not be dissappointed with them! ;)
