laguiole knives

Good and bad. Getting more and more difficult all the time to spot the fakes. Yes, many far east and Pakistan fakes around. Best advice is buy a known French brand from a reputable dealer. BTW they are wonderful knives with a rich history and folklore around them with a distinctive style all their own. Good luck.

Pic of a 'genuine' Laguiole de L'artisan and a lower quality Laguiole with inferior horn, no tang stamp and no country of origin. The larger one, though suspect, is actually a quality blade with decent steel, grind and heat treat as far as I can tell. Good user just not as pretty as the smaller one.

Another good thing to do is check out the websites of the makers.

I met Giles about 10 years ago at a show. These guys do some great work.

Warning, if you start clicking links of the different styles you may be on that site for a while. The links go three or more pages deep.

The classic French Laguioles can be beautiful knives, and are excellen users. Put one next to a Texas Toothpick and you'll see they have a common ancestry somewhere. :)

they really are beautiful looking knives, my wish list is growing !! i may have to start selling my tactical knives to fund some of these, thanks for the pics and advice

Yea! What he said. I'll second it.

Have sold many of my traditionals this past year and have used the money to acquire two of Giles; the 9cm walnut burl with locking blade and 11 cm junniper burl with carbon blade.

Incredible, incredible, incredible.

There are many quality Laguioles at different price points. I subscribe to the idea that you get what you pay for. This are definitly nice knives to be used
and I have enjoyed using them.

Fit and finish, action, handles, overall beautiful knives. The wooden handles have a distinctive smell and can be quite noticable. The juniper is very fragrant and at times I will pull it out of my pocket to just sniff it!

When I ordered the 11cm, I thought at first it was kind of big for front pocket carry compared to what I was used to. Giles assured me they all carry them in there front trouser pockets and many carry the 12cm. The person who sold me the 9cm said they encouraged Giles to make the smaller version as American guys don't carry bigger knives in their front pocket unless they're clipped. Oh well.

Definitely a knife to try at least once!

Good luck with your quest.

I like them, they use to have an issue of blade edge hitting backstraps. A lot of makers have addressed this on their sites & advertise the use of blade stop.
The 2 I like are Fontenille Pataud & chambriard. Fontenille has just released a small lock back version & chambriard have a different look. I had the chambriard companion, great slicer.

I have a Rossignol Laguiole knife with horn scales my sister in law gave me one year for X-Mas about 10 years ago, definitely one of my favorites, even with the 440 SS blades it takes and holds a wicked edge.

This is my Sheeple Friendly knife, I pull it out during dinner when ever we go out for a meal.

Are the high end Opinel knives and Laguiole knives comparable and if so what are your openions for those that have tried both?

Not the same. The Opinels are truly bargain cutlery, but excellent working quality, like the Old Hickory knives: "this dish is cheap but delicious."

The true, high end Laguioles, however, are custom workmanship. They can be showpieces, as well as fine daily carry knives. Production Laguioles are like the better quality slipjoints, an old and useful pattern which often looks pretty good even at the low end.

bruss, you are welcome.

I have a set of Laguioles steak knives and I always wondered about them. They are VERY well made with some really great file work on the spine and tang. My brother in law gave them to me for Christmas last year. He bought them at a local discount store for 30 bucks, they had no idea what they were,
