Today I got to hold and test out a knife I've overlooked, really prejudged, for a long time. The French Laguiole (pronounced layole) I had always considered a dainty, cheap knife for tourists. Today I can tell you that I was wrong. These are stout, well built knives with strong backsprings and NO blade play whatsoever. They sport the 12c27 steel, think good stainless, and their dainty looking handles really mold themselves to you're hand, and give excellent edge control.

I got these two from Sarge, and want to extend my thanks to him. He has led me down the path of another knife that I really like. A knife style, a culture of makers, that has been around since Napoleon. Good stuff Sarge. Thanks!

Dang it:grumpy: You enablers are making it harder and harder for a guy to save money;):D I've been meaning to give these a try for a year or more now.

Actually, they've been around long before Napoleon, and the bee story was added later. I think the insect was originally a fly. :)

Great knives. Compare one to a Texas Toothpick and you'll see they are long-lost brothers -- blade and handle silhouette the same; the Laguiole tends toward a thicker handle and is more often made of exotic and decorated materials.

Even in France, there are good and less-good, and many of the cheaper models use 440A instead of 12C27.

Dang fountain of knowledge, you are, Essav. Thanks.

I always have preferred simple folders, with a single large and well shaped blade. Knives having a bit of history and tradition behind them especially appeal to me. Glad you like those knives Andy, just remember if you slice your thumb with one, you're supposed to cuss and swear in French to get the full effect. :D

I'll have to think for a minute on my french cuss words....

What brand of these is affordable and a good quality? I've always found that most good laguioles tend to be overpriced. You guys know of any good deals?

In southern Belgium a buddy of mine nearly started a brawl with his woefully inadequate grasp of French. At a snackbar, he went to order a hot dog, which in French would be a chien chaud. Instead, he quite loudly ordered a chaud chien. The guy behind the counter's jaw dropped, and he stared at my buddy like he was stupid, refusing to serve him. My buddy, now getting flustered, loudly and repeatedly demands a chaud chien. People start getting up from their chairs and facing this crazy red faced American. Seeing things are going sour, my buddy backs down and comes back to our table muttering. He asks me, "what in hell is wrong with these people?". I answered, "gee hoss, I don't know, reckon it ain't everyday an American stomps in and orders him a DOG IN HEAT!". :p

Don't sweat brushing up on your French Andy, when you cut your finger with that Frenchie knife, just yell "merde, merde, merde", loud and with feeling. ;)

In Spanish:

"Perro Caliente" = Hot Dog

"Perro Cliente" = Customer (is a) Dog

Don't make the mistake I did. :(

I,m getting the cuss jar ready . I hope you have a lot of quarters . I consider French one of the most poetic of languages . When they want to get down and dirty it is time for the little ones to leave the room and put the flammables in a safe place .

I just got my first Laguiole,De Forge. Thanks to Sarge, Blessed be his name"for turning me to French knives.
Just like mr. Ray Wylie Hubbard sings"Somethings under Heaven are just cooler than hell".
I believe another Laguiole is in my future.

Aparrently in france, 'otdog is the most common pronuciation of hotdog, likewise with le parking. In quebec on the otherhand you'll have the language police after you for trying to pass those off as french.

Those are some nice looking folders, I can't bring my self to look at many knives these days, 36 dollars doesnt buy much of a knife, besides I need that money for food. Tuition was due yesterday so I am officialy flat broke.

I second that Jake!! I barely made it through Sarge's first thread about these, and this one has tipped the scales..

Stay tuned for my review....:grumpy: ;) :)

I have been completely enamoured with them since getting my first. They are stout, sharp, and beautiful. SWEET!

There are a LOT of imitations. But there still are good ones. "Laguiole en Aubrac" and "Forges du Laguiole" are the best.

I have an Arbalète G. David with thumbstud and linerlock (less classy, but I got it at 50%). One of the wooden scales fell off, I have to put it back. But it's the knife I carry when I have to be classy, does the job very well.

A friend of mine had the chance to visit the "factory" and bought a knife directly from them. Pure beauty. HI kamis are great with khuks, but craftmens from Laguiole have a few centuries of advance in folders.

ok first fontenille pataud are the best of the quality, ad there is amny makers and many aspects on how to judge the quality,
one main thin is thier qualty of file work and ither forged and fines "fly" on the back spring,
also recently they have new very nice locking models :D:D:D:D.........

their qualty control is miles better than al other makers..
and the smoothness of the loks and the mechnaisms is realy somethign !!

now, actualy thes eknvies dont date form before naepolion,, or even form 100 years aho,
they mostly come form after ww2, the are sort of a final evolution on the various french knives, from various regions..
..
440A instead of 12C27 ... 440a and 12r27 are about the same, actualy 440a is better!.. look at the chemcal composition, :)
