Any chance of buying some lumps of laha for
experimenting & comparing?

Ditto for the magic stone?

The latter I'd like to find out if it's limestone,
marble, or ????????, maybe something unusual.

Just a pinch for the poor curious scientist?

Darn it, I'd come over and pinch you if you lived closer! Waa-HEEHEE!:) :p :p ;) ;)

On a more serious note, however, It would be interesting for those qualified in such things (Not Me!) to tell us about these seemingly magical compounds. Good Ideer!

The kamis sent me some magic stone BEFORE it had been converted to polishing compound. It looked like some granite pebbles to me. The commercial laha which the kamis prefer to use because it is much easier to handle and work comes in billets about the size of a silver dollar -- they stick it where they want it and then heat it -- much easier that pouring the boiling concoction which always spills on your hands and feet if you're wearing choppals.

I'll bring some of the finished magic stone and laha, too, my next trip over. Right now I don't want to bug the kamis with this request because I know it will take a day out of production. I'd go into detail but don't have the time -- just take it on faith that it would take the kamis a day to have their meeting about this, decide how much, how to pack, etc.

Hmmm.

May I suggest that you mail it to yourself?

Bringing in powders and brown resinous substances sounds like a potential nightmare at customs!

At least if you mail it, you aren't held up while the inspectors satisfy themselves as to the identity of the materials.

That would be easier to ID than the powder. If you still have some could you post a picture someday?

I sent all I had to the guy who owns 800 khukuris. He wanted it for some reason. I don't know if he was going to use it to polish his collection or was just curious.

I remember some moments of excitement at LAX coming in from Asia. The customs inspector reached into my bag and pulled out a little green/brown cube and demanded "What's this?" I had no idea what it was or how it got there. Upon closer inspection it was a fragment of an insense like coil that is used to drive away mosquitoes.

They let me keep my busted mosquito coil but they took away a bag of eucalyptus leaves I had gathered.

I think the inspectors enjoy a little excitement in their day, so go ahead and pack the laha.

They tried to bust me once for bring back a few Biris which are sold in most Indian markets in the US. I notice our own Indian market here in Reno has them for sale.

Well, heck...there are a few things I wouldn't mind getting, now that you mention it...;)

you'd have to come back with 4 - 150 lb. bags, though...;)
