Lake Minsi Rec Area and Archery Fun

Had a chance to get to Lake Minsi Recreation Area and continue practicing my archery skills. Two months and I'm starting to improve my instinctive shooting.
The park has multiple trails, but my path has a distinct purpose :)

Using instinctive judgment and skills, like you would use when throwing a ball, is a complete departure from using sights, but extremely rewarding:

Consistent form: flat drawing elbow, anchor point, smooth release, repeat:

My arch-enemy and nemesis, stage 13, where I've previously lost 2 carbon arrows. 22 yards with nothing but bog behind it

Had a little revenge on it today

This is what me and Mr Grohmann think of this friendly forum. Hope everyone had a great Saturday
and had a chance to practice and improve their skills, and enjoy a little slice of the simple life

Awesome pics man, what make of bow is that?

Fonly,

I picked up this Bear Black Bear for $50 bucks off ebay and it doesn't have a scratch.

Any of the Bear Kodiaks, Grizzly's, Black Bears, etc from the 60's-80's are great bows to get into the sport for cheap. I read the shorter magnum's may be a little harder to shoot for a beginner, so I avoided them.

As you can tell, I'm really enjoying the activity :p

great pics man.. i haven't shot for a few weeks, i think we might try and hit the range tommorow...:)

Great pics, dude! You're putting the arrows on with the index (odd-colored fletching-- orange in this case) facing in the wrong direction, though. It should always face away from the bow so that your fletching doesn't bump the riser of the bow when you shoot. :)

I need to do some archery again soon. I'm a level 2 NAA instructor, but I haven't gotten to shoot in ages. :(

Please post some pics. I love those 3-D range family pics of yours. They were part of the reason I moved over to trad shooting. I already picked-up a Little Bear for my oldest daughter and am looking at an Ed Mikuta longbow for my littlest girl:

Then maybe, a longbow for myself

42blades-- good observation, but that's not always true... one of the first steps in tuning arrows for me, as well as most of the folks i shoot with, is to shoot with the index/cock feather facing in... this small and simple adjustment can easily help correct the flight of an arrow...

right on Brians... thanks for the kind words... my older son shoots a really cool longbow made by a small company called "Black Rhino".... check them out, they're pretty darn nice... they make a few different bows, that primarily are meant for kids, women and light adult bows.. www.bows.net

That was exactly my experience guys. I tried both and seem to get better consistency with the cock feather facing in. At least with this batch of carbons.

i shoot the vast majority of my arrows with the cock feather facing in... it has always worked for me...

Hey brians,

Nice pictures and good to see somebody getting out there shooting. I wish there was somewhere closer to me - I haven't shot for quite awhile.

A couple of questions, though ----

brians I also got to have some archery fun today. We did our Christmas with our daughter and grand kids. Our grand daughter who is 9 is very interested in shooting bows and I were out in the side yard this afternoon. I just got a new Sage LH #50 take down for 119.00 at 3 rivers. Nice bow. It is my first take down and I dont have much time with it as of yet seeing as how it got here today. Doug

What a great deal and a nice looking bow. Please post some pics when you get a chance to set it up and throw some arrows downfield. I've never shot a takedown.

My littlest one is 9 as well and she wants a "pink" bow  She's really girly but wants to shoot :)

The nice thing about the Mikuta bow above is that it is marked with two different draw lengths. 12# @15" AND 21# @20", so it can grow with her, at least for awhile. It's under $100. He's from Rome, NY.

I shot it today around 10 yards, I am very pleased with it so far nice smooth shooter. Cant wait to go play when it is warmer out, it is 0.5 degrees here now and was only about 13 today. Doug

I saw that bow....Nice!!!

I need to get me another takedown recurve.

Archery is so fun.

I agree J, I have shot for a good many years but it has been a while since I shot a recurve instinctive. I have been shooting compounds for many years but am so geared up to be playing with the recurves 3 of them now. I figured for the price this one will be nice to through in a backpack as well. Doug

How did you set it up? Did you put on an elevated rest or are you planning to shoot off the shelf? Planning on any string silencers? I had wool on one string, then purchased another string and put on beaver :)
