good day all, I made this little documentary for another forum but thought I would post here for your enjoyment,

I worked on a blade yesterday and thought I would take a few pics for a little WIP.

steel bar is laminated Hitachi white with stainless cladding.

What the flat bar looks like and after a few heats of forging/shaping and drawing out.

more or less final forging with taper from tang to tip, precision forging isn't necessary. The blade goes into wood ash and vermiculite for annealing. Then it's easy to saw and grind the profile as required

cold forged, profiled, straightened, stamped, tang shoulders cut

check to make sure the core is centered

with clay slip layer ready for HT and quench

quench into straight water

quenched and flash tempered

straightened blade on wood stump after hardening

initial rough grinding and check to make sure the core is exposed properly

more straightening as required during the grinding process

and that's it...blade is ready for final grits and polishing

thanks for looking, any questions?

From that picture final forged to the next one was that all cold forging smoothing out the surface and is the purpose of cold forging to make up for the different rates of expansion of the two metals and to relieve some stress before heat treating. Also is the cold forging on the outer layers only and not profiling looking good thanks

yes, smoothing out the highs and lows, the surface smoothing is more noticeable with a 50 lb power hammer than it is by hand.
The purpose is primarily smoothing of the outer layer surface, blending the highs/lows. I don't thing stress relieving is accomplished by cold forging.
yes cold forging is on the outer layers only.
