I am thinking about asking a custom maker to make a chefs knife for me and I have a few questions about laminated steel.

1) how is it made? is it like damascus but just layered differently?

2) how durable is it? would a laminated steel stand up to 4-5 hours a day of use or would it fail?

When I make laminated steel(not very often) I just use a slightly thicker bar in the center of the billet. This is what becomes the edge, if it remains in the center of the billet(sometimes it wanders)
If properly done it should act just like a solid, single piece of steel.
As far as durability goes, that has more to do with the steel choice and the heat treatment than being laminated.
Thanks,

so I don't need to worry about failure at the lamination. Thats good to know.

Failure of the lamination should not be an issue IF the billet was done properly. If it was not it will be apparent rather quickly. Most Laminated blades are made from carbon core with 416 sides. If there was a flaw in the lamination especially in the transition zone if it is not readily visible it will rust rather quickly. If it is done properly it will hold up as well as the parent material.

Thanks Chuck I just tried to go to it and the site seems to be down. I'll check again tomorrow to see if it's back up and fix the link.

Fallkniven and Helle are two companies that make many laminated blades .These of course are made in a steel mill where they make a large sheet of laminated steel .Delaminations are rare !
The rule then is make it carefully !!
