I recently picked up this Lamont Coombs Trailguide-style piece from BF's Makers Forum. Lamont made an impression on me not only because of the wide variety of styles he makes, but his beautiful sheath work as well. He makes hunters, neck knives, fighters, sub-hilts, Japanese-style, Randall-style, and others. Some of his other work can be seen here.

Anyway, I've been admiring his work, but I always seemed to be a few minutes to late to acquire any of his knives. I finally had a chance to get this piece a few weeks back. It got a 5" mirror-polished ATS-34 blade and a box elder burl handle with stainless fittings and stacked red/black/stainless spacers. With 3/16" thick stock and an overall length of 10", this is a substantial knife. The grinds on this knife are excellent, as is the fit and finish. Even the maker's mark is cool. It's also extremely sharp, as I unfortunately found out the hard way.

The sheath is a beautiful brown dyed leather with frogskin inlays and is a very nice compliment to the knife.

All pics are by the maker. Enjoy...

I love that. The knife and sheath definitely make a great package.

Congratulations on the acquisition.

He does great work. This is no exception. It was very warm-feeling in the hand when I handled it at the East Windsor show. Superb combo!

I always like seeing the work of a maker that can make a sheath that well. I really like the look of the knife as well.

This is a really lovely interpretation of an exceptionally fine pattern...it looks superb. It almost makes me wish that hunter/utility patterns held more personal appeal.

Did Lamont make the sheath or did Chris Kravitt?

Thank for the comments, guys.

Steven - Lamont made the sheath. It's got his makers mark stamped on the back of the sheath. In addition, here's his quote from the original for sale post:

Good question STeven. I would venture to say that Lamont made the sheath but he learned his leathercrafting skills from Chris Kravitt. They are good friends and both live in Maine. It is always a pleasure to see them at the NCCA shows in the northeast.

Blooded already, (hope it was just a nick). :)
Agreed, the frog skin and box elder burl work well.
Terrific looking grinds and the mirror-polish is blinding. :D
Congrats.

I'm in agreement here. I've been watching Lamont's work improve for years.

His work with Paul Rohaly designs is also well-worth looking into. Both great men to deal with.

Cool.
