I stumbled on him looking at Breeden's Kat knife. I don't remember seeing him mentioned in any of the 'recommend me a knife' threads. A Google search turned up a bunch of sales and his BF account, but no in hand reviews. So, how are they? They look great, although the belly looks a bit deeper than I like. Also, he has the best website of any knifemaker that I have seen.

I don't have one (yet) but believe quite a few on this forum have purchased from him. I'm sure they will be along soon to share stories and pics.

I was very close to ordering from him a few weeks ago but he didn't have anything available at the time so I went with a Bark River.

I will have a Landi eventually, and I'll do a healthy review.

I have a PSK and an early one off 3" blade w/ tulipwood from Landi. Both are 1095 and heat treat must be good 'cause they hold their edges well. John seems to put a good bit of thought to the handle design as they are full and comfortable. Kydex and leather sheaths hold the knives securely. Fit and finish are very good. Solid knives. http://landiknives.com/:thumbup:

i sharpened up a landi MPX a week or two ago...

neat blade, plenty beefy. the handle didn't quite sing to me, but i certainly wouldn't turn it down if i were in an emergency. the edge was in decent shape when i got it, not too thick like alot of factory blades, and the full convex wasn't too curved, it was almost like a flat grind.

it had ilbruche leather, so i don't know about the sheath.

overall, the aesthetics turn me off about the MP series. the long low top and the bull nosed tip don't do much for me. also, the tiny hook at the end of the handle seems funny to me.

but that is purely aesthetic, and i don't doubt that the landi knives perform as solidly as this one feels.

i have gotten two in trade so far...the PSK ans the MPM...both very solid and capable knives. edge geometry needed help on my two examples. so i ficed that and they seem to work just fine now.

I've got one, 1095 field knife. The knife is great. It was decently sharp when I got it, but screaming sharp now. The blade is nice and thin, a really great slicer, and what I look for in a hunting knife. The leather sheath left much to be desired, but it was one of his first attempts. The kydex sheaths that he makes look pretty good. I'd say that the knives are great values in users.

I'll take the part about the website as a compliment since I did it for him. I own 4 landi's (2 mps's & 2 mpm's) and have a couple of mpx'x on the way. For the price they are hard to beat. I have used the mps a lot and find that its a very good blade. I did convex the edge to give it some more umph and it has held up really well. 1095 is a good steel and the heat treat is really good. The handle is comfy as well. I have split some huge logs with the MPM and its bigger than it looks, but is a great all around blade. His kydex is good as well. If you want any additional information, drop me an email.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. And Siguy, thanks for your observations on the blade profile, I had a lot of users wanting a deeper belly and went with this for my first model.

Mikeal, please email me or ask any questions here, I would be happy to answer.

But, to help you out and any others... I met a fellow by the name of LT Wright (Blind Horse Knives - LT has been instrumental in my progression - he is certainly one of the good guys) at a Gun Show, here in Pittsburgh, January of 2007. I had always wanted to try and make my own knife and he inspired me to do so. I bought some hardwood scraps a couple of 440C blanks, pins and epoxy and went to town. I turned my 3X21 sander over on my work bench and clamped it down to use as a stationary sander. The bug bit hard and by May of 2007 I bought a Coote Grinder, I built about 14 knives last year and posted a pic of my first ten in December, Thane or Tknife was kind enough to buy my first knife (my second I ever made) in January of 2008. It went from interest to hobby to part time "business/hobby" in a year. I had drawn out the MP series and liked it, profiled a few and posted them hear on the WSS. The reaction was great, I had also posted them on a a couple other forums... I was blessed to receive many orders, and I say that with all humility, to those of you who ordered a knife, thanks, if you still haven't received it, I am working on it:)

I do have all of my knives professionally heat treated, tempered, cryoed, and tested to a guaranteed Rc by Peters Heat Treat in Meadville PA.

I am almost done with my 1095 MPX/MPM/MPS orders, I do have a few blanks left over about 6 out of 75 I started on back in the spring. I have taken a lot of orders on my PSK series as well, I will be starting a batch of O1 PSK's this weekend (as well as more 1095 MPX's.) Followed by A2 MP's in October, as well as a few other designs that I have, including a "survival" knife that I want to get feedback on from the WSS, maybe by November or so.

I have learned a lot, as well as seen (and heard of) where I need to improve.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity, let me know if you have any questions,
John

Here is a pic of my most recent MPM:

Landi,

you sir and I have a mutual friend in LT Wright. He and I are working on a new knife for BHK's and yeah he is a great guy. and sir you have a great knife. I an wanting a MPX for heavier use...we need to get together and figure that one out.

You will get a full write up on the MPM i have this month. I am gonna give it a real test on our camping trip.

right next to a WorkHorse....hehehe

I've got two Landis on their way. One is MPM with green micarta/black liners. The other is MPS with Osage/black liners. I'm excited to receive both and give everyone some feedback as soon as I'm able.

I'm eagarly waiting for a smaller (MPS?) or the even smaller one (PSK?) in green canvas to pop up in the for sale forum.

I was so close to picking up the MPM you just posted pics of but the handle color and coated blade stopped me.

This isn't a hint or anything...... Don't take it as a hint....... I'm just saying....... If I got an e-mail about a day before the next one popped up that would be completely unfair to everyone else and that would be unacceptable. And the fact that my E-mail is in my profile really worries me cause if some unscrupulous maker were to get it and send me an e-mail about a knife that was about to go on the block, I would never forgive myself.:D

LT makes good knives Langston. Can't wait to hear how the MPM works out for you.

Othello, working on your knives this weekend as well....

And shotgunner, I do have two MPS blanks available, in 1095. Do you want SS pins or screws?:)

Hmm, very nice blades, Landi! Myself, I'm a big fan of plentiful belly. The blade profile of the MPM reminds me of the old-style Ranger RD blades, actually. It provides lots of cutting edge as well as a good sturdy point. If I didn't already have a knife on order I might just have to give in and grab one. ;)

IH8U, great job on the site as well.

~My computer keeps making me double-post by accident. Sorry about that.~
