I was working for an old guy today doing some wiring in his house and we got talking about knives and such. He showed me a sword he picked up at an auction a while ago just because nobody else really wanted it. From what i got off the markings and from googling it, I determined it is most likely a British infantry officers sword made by Landon & Morland in London between 1848 and 1856. (this is based on the handle and blade design as well as the etching design on the blade, as well as matching the makers mark and info at the ricasso area) It has a fully etched/engraved blade, and has the original handle material which one site told me may be some type of fish skin? The hand guard appears to have been brass but it very tarnished, the blade etching is intact however there is no sheath. The original grip material is segmented by what appears to be ornamental copper windings. He didn't seem overly attached to it so i was considering trying to buy it from him. Can anyone give me a rough idea what it may be worth or if its rare at all? i am assuming that being roughly 160 years old and from London that there likely aren't a whole pile of them up here in Canada. Any info on this sword at all would be greatly appreciated.

I realize that no pictures is worthless basically, but i was in a customers house and didnt really want to ask if i could take pictures of his stuff, (may seem sketchy to them). I was basically just wondering if its even worth asking if its forsale. or if anyone had any info at all. Sorry about asking for a value. I forgot about that rule. I can delete this thread if need be. My apologies.

Condition is everything, Scabbards are half the value. Fish skin often dogfish. The Wiki link above probably lists what you are looking at as far as type goes. The scabbard, as mentioned missing, was probably leather with brass fittings which might classify it better than I can but likely why it is not with the sword. Sometimes listed as sergeants swords. Robert Wilkinson-Latham is well versed with retailers and may shed more light for you. This thread may be of help to you.
