Is the Lansky 2x8" Combostone and a Norton Combination Crystolon JB8 stone the same stone?
Is the Lansky just a Norton repackaged?

I have the lansky and like it. I was going to get a Norton Crystolon JB8 because they advertise it as finer grit number. But I'm wondering if its realy just the same stone

How do the two compare?

Lansky sent me another email saying their combo stone and canoe stone are both aluminum oxide. They said they contacted their manufacture to double check after I questioned them on it
First they told me the 2x8 combo was silicone carbide. Benjiman says they are S.C.

The canoe stones are definitely green silicon carbide. I suspect they didn't actually contact the manufacturer.

Just look at the color of the abrasive. Aluminum oxide doesn't come in black. The Japanese manufacturers generally use white aluminum oxide and then add tints to their bond to color code their stones, but Western manufacturers use the natural coloring of the abrasive grade. Aluminum oxide comes in white, brown (which can look blue-grey depending on how it oxidizes during firing), pink, ruby, and blue. The orange kind you see sometimes is actually white with a binder that causes it to look orange. Silicon carbide comes in a pale green-grey and black.

Hi,
If you search "black aluminum oxide" it returns pictures of black sand blast media.
Emery (or corundite) is black or gray and if you search for "Emery Grain Powder" you'll get something like ALUMINIUM OXIDE AL2O3 - 56% FERRIC OXIDE Fe2O3 - 18%

So applying the tequila rule it can be called black aluminum oxide? :) ( if its at least 51% agave it can be called tequila )

Emery is a naturally occurring form of aluminum oxide that isn't typically used in bonded abrasives. It's almost exclusively used as sandblasting media or in abrasive papers.

I believe 42blades. I think Lansky's phone answering person doesnt have a clue
I bought my Lansky 2x8 ComboStone from you 42blades so I know you know what it is.

So the 2x8 Lansky Combo stone is Silicone Carbide also?

All signs point to it being standard "black" silicon carbide. The reason for the lighter color is that the grit/bond ratio changes as grit changes and influences the color.
