Lansky AND Sharpmaker?

I have a Lansky diamond kit and love it. It was easy to reprofile my new BM 720 and others. But now I'm thinking, from all that i've read here, that a Sharpmaker would be good for routine touch-ups.

So I'm asking all that have used both systems, would the Sharpmaker be a wise addition, or should I just keep using the Lansky and save that money for another knife?

Also, if I am putting a Lansky 25 degree edge on my knives, would I be able to touch that up easily on the Sharpmaker?

Thanks,
lear

I have a Sharpmaker and have been considering a Lansky, so would be interested to hear this, too.
lear, I use the Sharpmaker for quick touch-ups mostly. The angles are 30 and 40 degrees.

Do you guys go through the entire "procedure" per instructions with the Sharpmaker when touching up or just use the fine stones?

What type of success have you found using the Sharpmaker stones in the flat stone, freehand sharpening mode, or does anyone bother?

lear,

My favorite method of sharpening is to reprofile and do the back bevel with sharpening stones or diamond (or a Lansky rig for that matter) followed with a Sharpmaker treat. That way I don't have to rely on the Sharpmaker to do the back bevelling, which usually takes a long time.

Also, if I am putting a Lansky 25 degree edge on my knives, would I be able to touch that up easily on the Sharpmaker?

On some thin knives, that's exactly what I'll do. Let's say that the 25 degree on a Lansky is a true 25 degree (very unlikely), with the Sharpmaker having a 30 degree angle you'll end up with 2 different angles, which is a moderate back bevelling (not that much difference).

For me the fine stones work just fine for touch ups. I also use the coarse/black stones whenever I want a rougher finish (read: microserrations).

I have both the Lansky and first Spyderco. I find the Lansky to be more versitle but use the Spyderco much more often, no need to mess with the clamp. So, yes it is worth it. There is a much wider selection of stones and angles with the Lansky.

The ceramic stones work great free hand but so will the Lansky stones.

Getting an exact angle with the Lansky is not easy. The angle depends on the distance between the cutting edge and where the guide rod contacts the slot in the clamp. Also, the rod will bend a bit if too much pressure is used.

Lear, to answer your question I too used to have a Lansky daimond(four hone with extra fine) kit and loved it. But now I have a Sharpmaker 204 and it is worlds better. I thought I could get knives sharp on my Lansky well I was wrong. And without the mess of oil you just can't beat that. The 204 also has much more diversablity than the Lansky. I can even sharpen serrations blindfolded and have no problems. Hope this helps.

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.

I went and bought a Lansky kit today. Not the diamond, though. Got the Deluxe Sharpening System (LKCLX).
Have already used it, too. It's great for "bigger" jobs, like rebeveling an edge, but I'll still use the Sharpmaker for touch-ups.

Well, that settles it. I'm gonna order a Sharpmaker this week. Now I'll have the best of both (affordable) worlds.
Thanks all,
lear

I have both the 4 Diamond (and 3 stone set) Lansky Kits, and the "old" 203 Sharpmaker, which I bought "used" (but "like new") a few days ago for $10, including Priority shipping.

Since using the Spydie Sharpmaker, my knives are SO SHARP that I'm almost afraid to handle 'em without a box of bandaids close-by!.
