Yesterday I was trying to sharpen my ZT700 with the lansky kit. When I tighten down the clamp, the clamp broke in two at the area were I was tighten it down. :grumpy:

Now for the good news, the stones are really good to use for freehand which is obvious. My guestion is should I even bother replacing the clamp or just use the stones to free hand?

I'm new to the forums so I can't post pictures just yet. I will figure out how to after this post.

This has happened to me with both Lansky's and smiths. I got the KME and its a lot tougher. You can just clamp the blade back further for now. You might have to break the other side in the same place. There could be warranty too?

I'm sure Lansky would replace it under warranty, if you wish. Even if you choose not to pursue a warranty replacement, a new clamp isn't very expensive anyway ($15 or less, most likely).

And it never hurts to practice freehand with the stones anyway, even if you do replace your clamp for a backup. :)

So where did it break? At the thin step part or at the tightening screw? If at the step you can still use it, Just take a pair of pliers to the other side.

Needless to say that clamp is done. Depending on how old it is Lansky may replace it. There was obviously a defect for it to snap before the thread stripped out.
