Lansky Crock Sticks Fit in Sharpmaker Slots???

I was tinkering with my new Spyderco Sharpmaker and have been using the $14 Lansky Crockstick turnbox before I got the Sharpmaker. I've noticed that the fine rods for the Lansky are a finer grit than the fine rods for the SM. I was curious if the Lanksy crocksticks fit in the Sharpmaker. Low and behold there are circled cut outs at the bottom of the slots for the ceramic stones. They seem to fit real snug. Has anyone noticed this? Also has anyone verified the angle is accurate using the crock sticks in the SM???? If the angle is right it would possibly save me money by not having to order the ultra fine stones for the SM.

Also this is my first post! Glad to be here.

Welcome to the forum! :)

If your SM is like mine, it appears the circular recesses in the bottom of the triangular recesses are oriented straight up (vertically), and not at the same angle as the triangular recesses (15°/20° off vertical). There might be enough purchase for smaller round rods to get a foothold at the bottom, with the upper portion resting against the outward edge of the triangular recess, but I wouldn't really expect the angle to be a perfect match to the SM's settings; I'd assume the angle would be a bit wider, using the round rods. I'm sure the diameter of the individual rods used would also make a difference, with smaller rods resting more loosely in the circular recess and leaning more towards the outside edge of the triangular recess.

All that being said, it may still be useful in a pinch, if there's some unique advantage (grit/finish preference) to the particular rods being used in it. A while back, I figured out I could use the 3/8" diameter round ceramic rods of my old 'Kwik-Sharp' sharpener in my SM. It's rods actually fit snugly into the triangular recesses of the SM (against the flat sides of the triangle), and they're longer than the SM's rods. It also happens that the 'Kwik-Sharp' rods have been my favorite ceramics, in terms of the 'bite' they leave on knife edges. A win-win all around. :)
