I know there have been multiple threads on this, but maybe not on this exact subject. How, exactly, does the "Lansky Deluxe Turnbox Crock Stick System" compare to the Sharpmaker? Is there even any point in buying it, or should I just spring for the Sharpmaker? Money is tight...

I have a very old crock stick set that I purchased on an "auction site" and it works well and it was a great deal (under $15). I have since purchased a sharpmaker and I use that much more often now. Both get knives very sharp and if you can get one pretty cheap I would get it. I think you will like the edge you get and later when you have the money for the sharpmaker you can get that too and you will have the turnbox for camping or when you might need a touch up and don`t want to bring a $70 sharpener with you. I keep my crock sticks in the kitchen for my less used cutlery:)

I have both the Sharpmaker and the Lansky Deluxe Turn Box. The Sharpmaker has 30 and 40 degree angles. The Lansky has 50 and 40. I typically just use the 40 on either system. Both have FINE and MEDIUM stones. Occasionally I will use the Sharpmaker's 30 degree to back bevel a blade. Both are good systems but I find myself reaching for the Lansky more often. The set up and clean up are a tad bit easier with the Lansky. If the Lansky had 30 and 40 I think it would be perfect.

I've got both the Sharpmaker and the Lansky Deluxe Turn Box. Both sharpen very well. I keep the Lansky in my truck tool box. I think it's a little easier to round off the tip of your knife with the Lansky because of the round rods, but that's probably just me. You can easily use a drill press and make a couple of new holes in the Lansky. I drilled a pair at 30 degrees inclusive.
