Hi all.

Got a Lanksy deluxe.

Whats the best angles to get a 110 and a 882 scary sharp... still practicing.

Cheers all

From my experiences on the Lansky, to me, 20 seems too much of an angle, and 25 doesn't seem quite enough.

A while back I sharpened up the S30V on the Alaskan Guide 110, using the 25 slot. Comparing that edge to a new factory edge AG, it looks to me that the factory has a wider edge.

Probably one of these things that will come down to personal preference. Lansky guide says more durable edge with 25 and 20 for higher quality blades... So maybe next time I will reprofile the s30v to a 20 degree.

But, I have been using the 25 on my 110's for years and years with no problems.

this and 2 centavos dont buy ya nutin....

thanks guys!

Gonna get the Lansky clamp too... bit awkward at the moment.. I think its technique that I am lacking... amongst other things according to the better half lol

I used the felt tip pen trick to mark the original edge.
Then I hit it with the Lansky.
The 20 got all the pen mark off. But I like the 25.

While I take this moment to 'jack Mav's thread...should I get the Sapphire or Diamond hones? Worth it?
Or are the standard Pro issue FINE and ULTR-FINE fine enough?
Get it? FINE enough?!?!?!?!

I got the diamond hones,,,,,and quit using them,,,,,, don't know what it is, but I get as good or better results with the regular ones.

Now,,, I did find that going from say 25 to 20, the diamond course would get you there faster. maybe I should have simply said that if you are going to reprofile, or clean up a really bad edge, the diamond may be faster.

I also have the hones for serrated edges. Believe it or not, I have sharpened my electric knife blades with them.... Recommendation there...trash them and buy new ones :D :D But they did get sharp, eventually... I rather sharpen a chainsaw blade anyday......

Goose..

I don't have the diamond for the Lansky.I tryied using a flat diamond type stone and did not get along with it.But this could just be me.

Sure, I agree. Go for the saphire if you've got a coupon.

I've had my Lansky for probably 15 years. I've replaced the coarse stone and the extra coarse in that time. I bought a diamond set a few years ago when I got my Mission Ti bladed knife. It was too hard for anything else to sharpen. I use the diamond stones to re-profile a new blade to match the Lansky. Then I revert back to the stone stones (:p ) to get the polished edges that I like.

For most of my bucks, I use the 20* angle for scary sharp. For 'tough' (field dressing game, etc) sharp I use the 25.

It sounds like this is what most of us go through with a new blade, or an old beat up blade that needs fixin. Profiling one to match the Lansky angles.

Thats why I said in a "wish list" thread back in late Nov or Early Dec, That I would like to see a Buck designed Lansky clamp type sharpener that would match the angles on our Bucks more closely. Specially the 110.

But not a huge problem after I sharpen one the first time and get "my" edge on it.

Buck should buy up Lansky and have a full service sharpening division...:D :D diversify!!!

I am with you Larry . If buck took over Lansky it would be a big Improvement.
Them they could address some of the problems the clamp has,and maybe
set the angles to there own knives.
