To expand on orangehero's post, I really don't think you could go too far wrong at the prices I saw. For the equivalent of one or one-and-a-half DMT 8", you could have all five of the Lansky 8" stones. If they had these prices two months ago, I'd be able to give you a testimonial by now, but I bought another brand. Here was my thinking: you're not supposed to use heavy pressure on diamond plates (this seems widely agreed-upon in BF)-this should minimize wear whatever your brand. Most people, even members here, will not sharpen enough to wear out diamond hones unless they abuse them. I know nothing about hones that are pricier than DMT, but I've read of more than a few instances of quality-control problems, so, no matter what you buy, there are risks(that, hopefully can be resolved with a reliable dealer). Last, by the time you wear the Lansky hones out, if you do, you will have had enough experience with them to inform you of your future needs and what you might be willing to pay for them. At the listed prices, you have relatively little to lose and, potentially, much to gain. FWIW, Lansky lists similar prices on its own website. If you chose to buy direct from them, you would be in good shape to address any grievances, if any.
Before I accidentally light a flame here, I'm not dissing anybody's product. From the tone of the OP, I deduced (perhaps incorrectly) that he was a first-time diamond buyer and cost-conscious. I attempted to post my version of common sense. I can afford a full slate of Atomas and Japanese naturals, but my use would never justify the expense. I already own far more "stuff" than I'll ever need(thank you, HeavyHanded for that little revelation and, of course, my WB Strop) and, basically, I find waste in any form somewhat distasteful.
IMHO, entry-level into anything should be just that. Don't learn to drive in a Ferrari; save that 'til you can really appreciate it.
