I'm getting into sharpening/reprofiling and I have a few knives to reprofile that came with uneven factory edge angles. I have the deluxe Lansky (5 stones) and was wondering if the extra coarse and coarse diamond stones would make reprofiling faster. Also, do the diamonds need oil? Thanks.

Edit: I will be sharpening/reprofiling VG10, BD1, Case CV, Case SS, 8Cr13Mov, 14c28n, Aus8, and 1095.

Diamonds should be used dry or with a little water. Make sure to clean them off when you feel the cutting action diminishing (loaded diamonds won't cut well). You should be able to get away with cleaning it by keeping a wet sponge by you while sharpening and just periodically wiping the atone on the sponge. Remember to keep light pressure and let the diamonds do the work. Moderate pressure or higher will pull diamonds out of the plate, prematurely wearing them out.

If your stones are already loaded, you can buy a thing of Barkeeper's Friend to clean the metal swarf out. Follow the directions and it will eat away the steel particles while leaving the diamonds, plate, and plastic housing unharmed.

The XC should be your starting stone. If the edge needs serious work you will want to start as coarse as you can go, but if you are just restoring and edge you already did before (no chips or damage) you can start with the coarse or medium.

I've used them... It will be faster relative to what you have now, but still won't be that fast for serious work. If you're really "getting into sharpening/reprofiling", I would suggest you start researching some better equipment.

I reprofile my 154cm and elmax steel with Lansky diamond hones. I use the medium and fine but have considered the coarse to make the job a bit easier and faster but do just fine with the two I have. They work great but cleaning them, I use Comet and an old tooth brush, now and then is good for the hones.

Hello kershawguy13,
The Lansky diamond hones, exp. the XC will make a huge difference. As mentioned above, don't use excessive pressure- I ruined mine by doing that. Just go easy and grind the edge until there's a burr on each side. The regular stones can take it from there.

Good sharpening,
Dave
