Lansky or Spyderco SM?

Well, I need to buy some type of sharpening system because I just can't freehand yet. And while I am working on that skill, I don't wanna have to buy a new knife just to be able to have a (semi) sharp one. I have been looking at either the sharpmaker or the lansky. Which is better? Keep in mind that I am on a limited budget ($50-$60 at most) and I would not want to have to use anything other than a strop with this. That is really the only problem I am having with the sharpmaker, it can't reprofile. Is there anyway I can get a diamond stone for the sharpmaker for fairly cheap to reprofile with? Would you just recommend the lansky instead? What is ya'lls opinion?

I think you're best off with the DMT Aligner Deluxe.

It doesn't get as much press around here as the Lansky, Gatco, and SM, but I really think it's the best system of this type.
 
sharpmaker...but get the ultra fine stones also

its pratically idiot proof and gives you the best bang for you buck
 
Sharpmaker is excellent, but not if you need to reprofile / rebevel.

And there are a LOT of production knives that need reprofiling.
DMT is making some of the best diamond stones out there today.

And their Aligner system is pretty foolproof, with the guide rods and all.

Another thing - its clamp, unlike the GATCO or Lansky, won't scratch your knife.

It's good to get a diamond hone system, or diamond hones, AND a SharpMaker for touch-ups. AFAIK, that's really where the SM excels.
 
i have a sharpmaker and some sand paper, and feel as if i can sharpen pretty much anything. it wasn't that difficult. i just carved some triangle ends on a couple of wooden dowels and then wrapped sandpaper around them for reprofiling.

This is the clamp system that I've used for the past several years. Way better clamp than Lansky.
