I just recieved my Deluxe system in the mail today. Im completely vexed, how does the damn thing work? Ive followed the instructions but it doesnt seem to be putting an edge on my blades. Any tips?

for the first time, I find that you'll have to grind the blade to the Lansky angle you choose, I use their 25 degree.

So, run through Coarse, Medium, Fine and Extra Fine the first time, then just a few swipes of the Extra Fine the next time will have it Shaving Sharp. I just threw my fairly dull Buck Mayo 172 in, four passes each side with the Extra Fine diamond and it took the hair off my forearm.

Mine is a diamond set that I inherited from my dad.

Feel free to email me at mike@mikemargolis.com if you have questions.

Use a black felt marker to put dots on the edge bevel. Then make a few passes with the stone. You will then be able to see where the stone is filing the blade. You will need to file all the dots off the edge and raise a burr. Then do the same on the other side.

I will try the suggested tips. They sound like they will work. I did suspect that the angle I was trying didnt match the blade. the tip about the felt tip marker is brilliant. Thanks again guys.

Also, I would advise using only one of the rods, instead of putting a different one on each hone. The rods in mine are all slightly warped. If you pick the straightest one and use only it you'll get better results.

The great thing about this forum is the eagerness of the members to share their knowledge. Ive used the above tips and now have very little arm hair left. Thanks again!

Method I use is to clamp the blade and use a pliers to tighten it (don't strip it though) to ensure that the blade will not move (very helpful for smaller blades).

Then Start with the extra course diamond and reprofile at the lowest angle (if it is a thin blade). Then I progress through my regular stones (I bought the ec diamond one by itself) so, course, med course, med, fine, and even the extra fine. I hold the knife in one hand and make strokes into the blade by moving the stone, not the knife. I count them and do the same on the opposite side. I start with 10 per side, then 5 and then 3, 2, 1 and then move to the next stone.
Then, I change to the next angle up and go 3 per side, 2, 1 with the course stone and similarly work all the way down to the extra fine (yellow) "stone".
I find that this makes a good edge and I don't have to strop (the yellow stone does a nice job) if I don't feel like it. I can shave arm/face hair with all my blades.

Goes pretty fast once you get the hang of it.

Just a helpful tip:

Put a thin layer of "Goop" adhesive on the area of the clamp that touches the blade and let it dry for 24hrs. You will now have a very grippy clamp that requires less tightening and holds the knife very securely.
I was even able to clamp the A.G. Russell ultimate pen knife after applying the goop. :D
