I'm getting ready to give up on this system. My para 2 is crying out for a new sharp edge. But I just cant seem to get it done with this system. With the 19 degree angle setting I can't get the edge, when colored with sharpie the color remains on the edge. When I go 22 degrees it hits the edge but still doesn't create a great edge. Do I need a better system or do I just suck! Any help?

while 22 degrees is not ideal for your knife it will give a sharp edge. the lansky allows the stone angle to change as you sharpen. if you will keep downward pressure on guide rod so it does not move up and down verticaly it will help. sharpen until you get a burr and then progress to finer stone. take your time and you should get sharp

Sometimes with a Lansky you won't see the colored in edge touched for a while. It depends on the original grind of the knife. If you keep at it with your coarsest stone (diamond really helps here) you can establish a new edge and then work the lighter stones from there.

I've been using lansky on all my knives and imo it works great. as Wvsaid, use your coarsest stone to the degree you want, make sure your stones are not sharpening the clamp instead of the blade. carefully inspect the edge to see if it is evenly "scratched" overall. Then just move on to finer stones. changing the angle of an edge takes some time tough, so dont worry. If you move from 30-20 you'll have alot of metal to remove. Also, convexed edges take some time to "re-flatten". Also, it maynot be a good idea to put a 17 degree angle on it. I've noticed that a 20 degree angle works better. If you put a 17 degree angle, your tip will get very fragile. Eitherway, on my high end steels, I put a 17degree angle along the blade, with a 2nd bevel of 20 degrees. For the tip I put 25 and a 2nd bevel of 30.

Some diamond stones may help remove the metal quicker. I used a Lansky to get a ZDP189 Stretch hair splitting sharp. I use an edge pro now, but the Lansky will work.

I had the same problem with my PM2 it's angle wasn't one the lanksy had preset so I took about 6 hours of my time and reprofiled it to 17 degrees. I really wish I had diamond then. Even still when I go to resharpen it with my fine diamond I have now the angle is slightly differant each time. I tend to just use the lansky for reprofiling anymore to ensure I get a fairly even grind then I can do it by hand pretty well.
The system isn't perfect and allows for angle changes, you just gotta go and alternate sides to keep your edge centered until one side gets a burr. Then go down the line of stones to where you want to stop, then I recommend you strop the edge to be sure the burr is gone. S30V is a tough steel and I've been told its known for having a wire edge that rolls when in light use making it seem dull. If you get that off you'll have a sharp edge for a good amount of time and its an easy steel to touch up as well. Once its sharp it doesn't take much to keep it there.
