I just picked up a Lansky deluxe sharpening system, as it says on the box. This is a 5 hone pack. So... the question is: Is this kit..good...bad...crap ? I was getting some bolts in a hardware store and this thing was really marked down so I spontaneously bought it. It's complete and unopened.

Ok, I'm by far no expert in sharpening yet, but I'm learning. I bought this Lansky setup myself and so far I'm not totally impressed. I practiced with it on some of my cheaper knives, I'd advise you to do the same. My main problem is that on my smaller folding knives I have a hard time keeping the blade pinched securely between the holders. Also, on the 17 degree angle setting the hone has a tendency to dig into the sharpener itself..like it was a design flaw. It seems like it takes a heck of a lot of steel off the edge too. Like I said, use it on some cheapos and see what you think but I'm going to buy a nicer system for my good knives.

Thanks for the info and link buddy. I have some little Moras that I can experiment with first. Now, time to do some reading.

I have a Lansky, use it & like it. But it's the only "knife sharpening system" that I've ever used. So I can't compare it to others for you. Small blades are a draw back of this system.

The lansky system is a fine system; maybe not the best but I can tell you I got some wicked sharp edges with it back in high school when I bought mine. I've long since gone to freehand sharpening and wll never turn back! I could use a diamond steel or something for serrations but not a system, no way.

All the said, the lansky system works fine, you just go 10-flip-10-flip etc on each stone until the burr is flipping side to side, step up to the next stone and repeat. If you take it all the way to the ultra fine hone, it will easily shave your face.

Its all i got and if use correct....it will do the job like the other higher priced ones will.Practice on cheap knifes until you get the full swing of it and you will see:)
