Lansky Spyder Sharpener: A first look

The Lansky Spyder Sharpener is medium grit. I think it might be quite similar to Spyderco's medium stones / rods. The sharpener gives multiple options. The flats, a groove for sharpening hooks, a slightly rounded edge (like Sharpmaker rods) and two rounded sides at different radii.

I like it. It is small, not only in lenght but in width, too. So one needs to be careful. A finger slips into the wrong place easily. And it is a little bit tricky to hold an consistent angle. What I like is the versatility. I sharpened knives for cutting buns (i.ee. small bread knives) with narrow serrations. These old knives were dull, I don't think that they've been sharpened ever. I took some time and patience but the result is amazing. Both are very sharp and cut aggressively. The difference between before and after is tremendous. To be honest: I did not expect this result.
Lansky does not offer any of the "dog bone sharpeners" (there is only one called dog bone, but let's call all four dog bones because of the shape and the plastic or rubber ends / caps) in fine grit. But they have a medium and a fine grit stone for serrations (for the angle-controlled guided system). The fine grit hone would be great for polishing the edge.

Back to the Spyder Sharpener. The rounded sides work great to deburr small woodworking knives like V-chisel or gouges. And - should it ever be necessary - the edged side fits perfectly into the teeth of a Swiss Army Knife woodsaw.
So the Spyder Sharpener would be a great option for keeping edges sharp outdoors. I will add the fine hone, too. This will be my new lightweight outdoor sharpening set. I have a Fällkniven CC4, too. It is easier to use the CC4 because it offers a wider surface. But the Lansky rods offer more options to sharpen edges or tools I could not sharpen on a flat stone.

A coarse triangular diamond rod would be nice to have even more options. To be able to sharpen even very dull or damaged edges. As Lansky offers diamond stones for their guided system: Hey guys, should you read this, think about a triangular diamond stone, please.
