Lansky systems?

So I was at Jax looking at 2-3 different lansky systems, one is the basic with three "stones" the deluxe with 5, then the diamond set which is 3 times the price of the standard.

If I am just gonna use it for sharpening my izula, and most likely a junglas soonish, do I really need to spend the extra for the diamond set?

Whats the difference, the diamond setup last longer?

Thanks in advance, sorry for the noob questions.

This questions pops up every few months. I bought a basic Lansky kit, used it twice and put it in the closet. I wish I would have bought a Spyderco Sharpmaker.

The Lansky-like kits are alright for very thin blades that are easy to clamp but with the full flat grind of the ESEE blades, I found the clamp was hard to keep consistent and the length of longer blades tends to become an issue.

Yes diamond stones last longer, are easier to clean, and cut faster when reprofiling. It's a little more expensive than a basic kit, but I'd look at the Sharpmaker, it's probably the most popular sharpening system around.

definitely not needed, but they do take some time off reprofiling jobs

Smith's makes a softstone/hardstone set that works really well for about 10 bucks. Buy a .89 cent sheet of 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit wet and dry and you'll be fine.

I have NOTHING good to say about any Lansky kit. Even their diamond stones suck.

I dont understand all the hate. ive got 2 sets, and all my blades will pop
the hair off your arm. I will admit the clamp, can be a real pain, on some
blade shapes.

I have a Lansky... its ok. I do kind of wish I had got a sharp maker. The Lansky has a lot of "parts" to put together, and as others have stated, the clamp is... Eh...

All that said, mine puts a pretty good edge on my RATs... but I may invest in a sharpmaker later.

been freehanding for about 4 decades now.
tried a buddy's sharpmaker and hated it - could NOT get a decent edge (for me)
tried a lansky and loved it. actually bought my own.
got the 5 stone system with the white ultrafine - no diamond stuff -
works on my Izula, HEST,and 5 just great.
lansky system is so easy my 2 kids and wife can use it

Count me in the "+1 for Lansky" group. There was a bit of a learning curve, but once I got the hang of it I can but an atom splitting edge on my blades.

I like my Lansky Turnbox.

A cheap, simple and compact way of handling the whole angled rods concept.

I have the one with two sets of rods. It keeps my knives razor sharp.

I've had my delux lansky set for years and used it on lots of knives and it has worked very well on all of them. They work for me...
