Does anybody have any experience with the Lansky Turn Box 4-rod sharpener?
I saw one next to the Spyderco Sharpmaker at Bass Pro Shops for $13.

To the novice eye, it looks to be the same thing, at least in sharpening technique, to the sharpmaker, and it costs $40 less.

Come on, educate me, please.

I'm sure the intent of the turn box is to provide a certain level of portability with quality crock stick utility. You can't compare the SM to the turnbox in level of performance unless your looking at weight savings. I have the standard Lansky crock stick set and it doesn't compare to the SM in it's ability to handle sharpening tasks.

how long are the ceramic rods? if the rods are simular length..8"-10" w/base
it's a good deal. the only drawback is they will not sharpen some serration
designs.

The turnbox is decent, and at $13, it's not bad as a gift for someone who doesn't sharpen much, or as a starter sharpener. The fine rods aren't that fine, and leave a bit of a toothy finish, so it's good for kitchen knives or for EDC knives that you prefer for slicing. The two angles that are preset aren't all that acute, and it's only really suitable for doing touch ups and microbevels, but as long as you know the limitations, it's a good device.

No, it's not as good as a sharpmaker, but it'll restore an edge.

The SM rods are triangular. The angled edges can be used for serrated blades or for more concentrated attack on non-serrated edges. The flat sides allow a lighter touch than would be possible on a single-point-contact surface like the circular crock sticks.

The SM has an additional stone socket in the end of the base for sharpening scissors. The underside of the base has seating for the stones to be used as a freehand bench stone.

The SM rods can be purchased individually in the event of breakage. Also, diamond rods are available as well as ultra-fine rods.

I purchased the turn box sharpener from bass pro shops and i absolutely love it.the rods are long enough to sharpen my 7-9 inch blades and it gets them hair shaving sharp, pending the edge is in reasonable condition.many times i use my fine diamond stone for a few passes and then go to the turn box.i just got my reasonably dull recon tanto razor sharp on the turn box alone, best 15 bucks i have spent in a while,i highly recommend it.
